Page 64 of How We Hated

We just need to stop.

You obviously want this.

There’s a pause in our conversation, and I would kill to know what’s going through her head right now. When she doesn’t respond, I text back.

I fight for what I want, and I want you.

I don’t wait for a reply. I said what I needed to say. There’s no way this is over. It’s just getting started.

The next day, I head to our classroom early so I’m standing at the door before she arrives. As she walks up, I watch the way her breath catches when she sees me. That’s all the confirmation I need.

She tries to enter the classroom, but I block her way. Keeping her head down, she tries again to step beside me. Being this big of a guy has its advantages, as there’s no way she can go by me. She has no other option but to look up at me.

I feel the hesitation falling off of her as she slowly meets my eyes and her shoulders fall. She’s sad, and that breaks my heart, but it fuels me even more.

No one should stand between us.

No one.

I lean down so only she can hear me. “You’re about to find out just how competitive I truly can be,” I whisper to her.

Her breath hitches, and she blinks a few times, but doesn’t respond.

I see other classmates heading our way, so I move, letting her enter the room and following in behind her.

When class is over, she exits faster than anyone would if the building were on fire. Internally, I just laugh. She thinks she can get away now, but she must have forgotten that I sit behind her in the next class. I’ll let her have this win, so without a care in the world, I make my way out of the class to the couches.

“What’s that smug expression you’re wearing this morning?” Maya asks as she sits next to me.

I grin and look at her out of the side of my eye. “Just having a good morning so far.”

She raises her eyebrows in surprise. “Anything in particular?”

I wink but keep my mouth shut as Ben lifts her before putting her on his lap.

“What are you guys talking about?” Ben asks.

“Dalton here is having a good morning, and it makes me wonder why—or rather, who is causing this good morning,” Maya says with a grin.

Ben narrows his eyes, then questions, “What girl are you fucking now?”

Maya slaps his chest. “Don’t be so nasty.”

He grabs her ass and legs. “It’s not nasty. It’s amazing.”

She blows him off, then looks at me like she’s expecting an answer.

I don’t reply, so Ben takes that as his cue.

“Ah, he’s not fucking her yet. So, the question is, who are you trying to fuck?”

Maya slaps his chest again, but this time, he grabs her hand and keeps it on his heart.

I raise my eyebrows in confirmation, and Maya squeals.

“Oh, let me guess who!” She looks around, searching for the culprit.

“And just like that, I’m out.” I slap my palms on my knees and stand up. “You two have fun.”
