Page 68 of How We Hated

“We can just putLRH,” I state clearly, asking her with my eyes to stop.

She hides her laugh. “Okay, and some paws too.”

“That’s fine.”

We eat our lunch and continue to chat, but my eyes are glued to the locker room door that’s off the quad at our school. If they are having a team meeting, then the meeting must be in there.

When the doors open, I freeze as I watch all the guys pile out, looking pumped for the game tonight.

Marcus heads straight for our table, and I’ve never been so happy that he and Ashley are dating because it gives Dalton an excuse to walk here too.

“Hey, baby,” Marcus says to Ashley as he slides in next to her.

When they kiss, I instantly look at Dalton. Seeing him stare at me with this deep lust I’ve never seen before on anybody makes my heart pound out of control.

I hate that he’s keeping his distance from me, but, on the other hand, I’m glad he is. We might have been all over each other last night, but nothing has been discussed on how we would handle us being an us, especially with my brother at this same school. For now, we will continue to pretend we still hate each other, like we have since we were little.

The warning bell rings, and Dalton says goodbye to Marcus before raising his eyebrows the tiniest bit to me and walking off.

Ashley heads off to class with Marcus while Susiepractically jumps on me, squealing with excitement, “Please tell me you’ve kissed him.”

I drop my chin with laughter, not able to hide my huge smile.

“Oh my God, you have!” She slaps my arm. “I can’t believe you. It’s like you’re a whole new person.”

I sag my shoulders. “I know. I don’t know what he’s doing to me, but I can’t stop it.”

“Um, no. Please don’t stop anything. He’s Dalton freaking Wick. Do I need to remind you how many girls would die to be in your shoes right now?”

“But would they really? My shoes in particular?” I tilt my head in question, hoping she gets my drift.

She blows me off. “Whatever. Screw your parents. Or rather, please screw him and then tell me all about it.”

Now, it’s my turn to slap her arm playfully. “Slow your roll. Last week, he was still my sworn enemy.”

“And now, he’s your secret lover,” she drawls out her words with a little shimmy to her hips.

I laugh at her antics, but also at the fact that I can’t believe it myself.

Dalton Wick and I are secret lovers.

How the hell did this even happen?

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Natalie

“I’m so glad you’re coming tonight!” Ashley says as I hop in her back seat.

Susie turns to me with a sly grin on her face, but thankfully doesn’t say anything. I feel bad for not telling Ashley, but I need to figure out what’s really going on before we tell the world. There are a lot of other things that we have at stake here that other people don’t have to deal with.

Ashley drives away as a rush of excitement races through me. I know I won’t actually get to talk to Dalton until after the game, but knowing I’m going to go see him play is doing weird things to my insides that I’m not used to.

I hop out of the car after we get to the school, and Susie stops me before I can walk toward the entrance.

“First, we need to decorate your face.”

I hold my chin up high and to the side so she can get a good view of the area she’s going to decorate.
