Page 73 of How We Hated

I put my phone back in my pocket, then touch Susie on the shoulder as I get up. “I’ll be right back.”

She looks to where Dalton was sitting, then gives me a cheesy grin. “I want details.”

I laugh, then turn to head out of the barn to the place where we sat last time.

It’s dark in that corner of the yard, and I don’t see him until he grabs me and swings me around before he lifts me up to his level and kisses me softly. Our tongues dance together in a hungry swirl that leaves me breathless when he places me back on my feet.

“Hi,” he says before kissing me one more time.

“Hi, yourself.” I stare into his eyes, melting at the sight of them.

He holds me close to him. “I’ve wanted to do that since you walked in the door.”

“Well, I’m glad you didn’t,” I tease.

He looks deflated, letting go of me and sitting down on the curb.

“Hey.” I nudge him as I sit down too. “What just happened?”

He stares off ahead of him. “I know we didn’t really discuss things, but I figured, today, at school, you wanted to keep things low, so I did until we could really talk about it.”

“And?”

“And now, we’re here. Hiding. Away from everyone.”

I sigh. “Yep. This is us. Hiding.”

“Is this how it’s going to be?”

I nod emphatically. “Yes. I told you we couldn’t do this.”

He takes my hand and plays with my fingers. “But we are.”

I rub my lips together in thought, a million things going through my head.

“I like you, Natalie. I like the way you push me. I think you and I would be good together.”

“That’s the problem,” I state a little too firmly.

His eyebrows pinch together. “Problem?”

I look into his eyes. “I think that way too. But the only way I can see this working is if we hide. No one can find out.”

He tilts his head to the side, pinching his eyebrows more. “No one?”

I laugh. “Okay, maybe a few trusted people. I already told Ashley and Susie.”

This brightens his mood a little. “Oh, you did? What did you tell them?”

“That I kept fighting it.”

“You could have fought harder,” he taunts. “I was having fun wearing you down.”

I slap his shoulder with my other hand, and he grabs it, bringing both of my hands together with his.

“Ashley’s already helping our cause out.” I smile.

“Oh, she is, huh?”
