Page 75 of How We Hated

We climb on top, and I open the bag to pull out the sandwiches I made. Handing one to her, I say, “Okay, don’t get too excited. It’s just a turkey sandwich, but I did make it myself.”

“That’s so sweet,” she responds as she takes it from me.

I get the rest of the stuff I packed in my bag. “I also got us some grapes, chips, and waters.”

She smiles as she takes a grape from me and pops it into her mouth. “It’s perfect.”

We eat our sandwiches in each other’s arms, just relaxing in the amazing temperature of the season.

Once the sun has fully set, a cool breeze sets in, so I hop up to get a sweatshirt from my truck for Natalie to wear, but get another idea as well.

Turning on my KC lights, I spin the ignition just enough to get the radio to come on and connect my phone to play one of my favorite songs—something that reminds me of her when it talks about a girl coming from a happy family and the only bad she’s ever done was to see the good in the boy.

Somehow, I feel like this fits us right now.

“Sun to Me” by Zach Bryan plays as I walk to her, placing my hand out, inviting her to dance with me.

Shyly, she grabs my hand and stands up. I pull her into me, and we dance in the lights from my truck to a soulful love song.

I pull back to look her in the eyes, amazed at what she’s done to me in such a short amount of time. When I kiss her, I know I’m completely done for this girl.

Our kiss intensifies and all I can think about is thank God we’re standing because if we were lying down, I know I’d take this much further but not here, not like this.

When I slow down our intensity and move back slightly, I know she feels the same way by the way she grips me tighter like she doesn’t want me to stop.

It takes everything in my power to pull away from her completely and kiss her forehead just as the song ends. We both inhale, bringing us back to reality of where we are and sit back down, letting the music continue around us, enjoying these last few minutes we have together.

With her wrapped in my arms, I look down at my phone when I see a text come through from Maya.

Where are you?

I laugh as I text back.

None of your business. ;-)

I will find out who she is. You know that, right?

Yeah, but this is fun for now.

She sends back an emoji that’s sticking out its tongue, making me chuckle to myself.

“Who was that?” Natalie asks.

“Maya.” I set the phone to the side. “She knows I’m seeing someone and hates that I won’t tell her who.”

I feel Natalie get stiff in my arms.

I hold her tighter. “I won’t tell her if you don’t want me to.”

She sighs. “It’s just that they’re part of TimeLand.”

“And so am I, yet …”

I lean down, turn her head to face me, and kiss her lips. She melts into my touch and whines ever so slightly as I pull away.

“No one cares about our parents’ feud. They’ll get a kick out of hearing we’re together.”

She sits up, brings her knees to her chest, and bows her head.
