He grinned, his eyes dancing. “Hard pass.”

She made a face at him, giving him a pithy look. “It’s salty, savory goodness and good for you.”

He finally laughed out loud. “You’re not helping your case.”

“Okay, all right. But I will get you to try it before you leave,” she said, half laughing, half serious.

He grinned at her and gave her a noncommittal shrug. Reaching out, he engulfed her hand. “I knew you were trouble the moment I laid eyes on you.” His voice was very husky.

Kaiya drew a shaky breath when he rubbed his thumb over her palm. “You were only guessing.”

He slowly shook his head, his eyes darkening as his expression sobered. “No, I was dead to rights.”

Kaiya felt drugged by the intensity that enveloped them, almost afraid to breathe for fear she would shatter the spell that bound them. He continued to caress her palm, and she closed her eyes, losing all sense of space and time beneath the mesmerizing effect of his touch.

As dusk settled in, they made their way back to the precinct for a quick update. It was disappointing. No one had been successful. They would start fresh the next day.

After an intimate look and a soft farewell, Kodiak and the team headed back to the barracks, and she went home in a strange and disjointed state. There was so much she wanted to talk to him about least of all the job at hand, but it wouldn’t be smart to jump into something too quickly, although she craved the man on some elevated level.

She pressed the fob to lock her car and started up her path, slowing when she saw that the light she always left on was out, her front door shadowed. Then there was a scrape of a boot on the concrete that made her whirl around. A man charged her, knocking her off her feet. She grappled with him, as she reached for her sidearm, but he grabbed and twisted. She kneed him and got to her feet, but suddenly a black hood dropped over her head, and a blow to her temple dazed her. Her hands were pulled behind her and secured.

She stumbled as they pushed her along until she was shoved hard. She fell into the boot of a car, and as the door closed, she drifted into darkness.

There was a piece missing…no,a chunk gouged out of him. Preacher stared at the footage after they had landed in Las Vegas, knowing that Karasu…his Luna was in a fucking cargo container. The killing rage plowed through him like a runaway train, unstoppable and with a kind of power that could demolish anything in its path.

In the past when it was this bad–had it ever been this bad?—he would channel it using meditation and breathing.

But fuck Zen.

Fuck meditation.

And there was no breathing without Luna.

His fists clenched so hard, the pain traveled up his arms into his shoulders as the agony from his heart radiated to every pore and cell in his body.

All his skills and he was still one step behind these fuckers.

It was clear to the four of them that NSH had a large money base and that wealth had financed all the terror and the subsequent kidnapping of their women. It was hard to fight against that, but with the CIA, FBI, and NCIS by their side, the power of the US government backing them, they would find them, and NSH would have hell to pay when they did.

“Kat,” Iceman said. “Get me a fucking name from that company.” He pointed his finger. “This guy. The one who’s callously accepting his money for smuggling our women into Nevada. I want him in a faraway location so we can interrogate him without fuss.”

In other words, Iceman didn’t want anyone to hear this man scream.

“That’s something Bree will have to do. I can consult, but do nothing tangible as a CIA officer,” Kat said softly.

“I will do that if you promise me that the three of you will get some rest and a substantial meal into you. If you go off exhausted and hangry, there might be an accident that you can’t come back from.”

“We have everything to lose here, Bree,” GQ said, his handsome features contorting. “Some accidents are bound to happen.”

She sighed. “I can’t blame you…if Blitz was out…there. Okay. I’ll get a name, but do it for Rose, Luna, and Celeste.”

Preacher closed his eyes feeling as if his heart was going to collapse. His foundation, base…damn…structure was all her. Losing her just wasn’t an option.

“They wouldn’t want you in this state. Please, for them if not for me.”

“All right. Six hours and we’ll get a hot meal, but then I want answers,” Iceman said.
