“Fucking tell her yourself. You’re going to make it.”

A female voice sounded off to Iceman’s right. “I can go with him,” Bree West said. She rose, cupping the right side of her head. She was bleeding from an injury at her hairline.

“Blurred vision? Headache? Dizziness?” Iceman asked.

“No blurred vision or dizziness, but one hell of a headache.” She grimaced and drew a hard painful breath. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

“Okay, go.”

“Son of bitch,” Kat said under her breath, and Iceman breathed a sigh of relief. They were all alive. “I’ll be right back, Volk. Hang in there.” Iceman rose and headed toward the side of the chopper. Kat cried out when she tried to brace her hand, and Iceman supported her body as he helped her into a sitting position. She cradled her left hand and arm. He looked down at her bruised and swelling wrist. “Kat, you busted your wrist.”

“Wrap it,” she said through clenched teeth. “I can still shoot. Just give me my sidearm.”

One tough lady,he thought, as he crawled to the second med kit, released it from the side of the chopper, and opened it. He found an ace bandage and a sling. Pulling both out, he crawled back to her and carefully straightened the wrist as Kat groaned softly. He wrapped it tightly, winding around her hand, then putting the sling over her head, he set the arm inside. Grabbing her sidearm, he handed it to her. “Your mags good?”

“Yeah, I can manage. I always have them on my left side since I’m right-handed. Sit-rep?”

“Preach, GQ, and Bree are setting up a perimeter. We have mercs on the way. Volk may have fractured his pelvis, and the pilots are dead. I’m still breathing.”

She huffed a small laugh. “Good. For a minute there, I thought you were a ghost.” She clenched her teeth. “Dammit. I want to tear Trasker’s heart out with my bare hands…hand.”

It was his turn to chuckle. “I know the feeling, but right now we have to hold on until the cavalry shows up. You can bet they saw the RPG hit us. They’ll be sending out some help.”

She nodded. “You can count on me, Iceman.”

He nodded back. “I know that, Kat. They want us dead. They’ll be coming in hot.”

She shifted to look out the window. “Get down!” she shouted as bullets bounced off the windows and pinged against the chopper's armored body.

A second later, two men approached the door closest to Kat. She fired, taking one out. The other ducked back, riddling everything in front of him with bullets.

Iceman pulled his sidearm and dove past Kat to the partially open door, hitting the floor hard and rolling until he was wedged against the doorframe. He popped out and fired, clipping the guy on the thigh, then finishing him off with a headshot.

“Iceman?” Preacher’s voice came through his comm.

“We’re secure.” GQ came around the front of the chopper, wiping blood off his combat knife. When he saw Iceman hanging out of the chopper, he grinned, then inclined his head toward the trees in the distance.

He crouched and moved closer as a volley of shots came from that direction. Iceman made room for GQ to climb inside.

“Preacher’s got a good high spot,” he said. He looked at Kat and nodded. She nodded back. He looked over at Volk. “He okay?”

“He will be.”

GQ went over to the gun, cocked it, and aimed, pulling off an ear-splitting burst from the 7.62 NATO caliber electric M134 minigun with a three-k rounds-per-minute fire rate. “Man, nice.”

“Good shooting, GQ,” Preacher said through the comms. “The rest of them are bugging out.” GQ and Kat smacked palms, gloating.

Iceman’s eyes narrowed. “Yeah, we got them on the run.” In the distance they heard thewhop-whop-whopof blades. It was now time to go after his Rose and the others. Then it was time for Trasker to feel like the hunted one.

* * *

Trasker was coming for them.

Karasu, Rose, and Celeste were counting on it. He was the monster who had haunted the dark recesses of all their minds. But then there were thoughts of Preacher. He had made her stronger and had taught her how to breathe. Her whole body cramped, and not just because she was lying encased in snow and ice and she was freezing. Any longer and her fingers and toes would be numb. No, she missed him like a piece of her soul had been taken from her.

Her man was so beautiful, tough, his black hair always looking mussed, his face rugged, his body starkly chiseled. He’d been dark and tortured, lost and falling, just like her. But they had caught each other. They belonged together and after she ripped out Trasker’s heart, they would be together again.

Another shiver racked her body, but she was rewarded with the sound of a powerful chopper. Time to spring the trap. She was waiting in her snow cover until they landed and headed inside, then she would secure the chopper. No one was going to escape but them.
