She doesn’t acknowledge that she sees me. Instead, she walks over and starts to pull out a seat. Before she has the chance, I stand, doing it for her.

She frowns, looking at me like I’ve grown two heads, but eventually, she sits down, and I push her in before taking my own seat.

“You showed up,” I say. “Wasn’t sure if you would.”

“I said I’d be here, didn’t I?” she tosses back before craning her neck to look at the board. “I’m starving though. So, do you mind if I grab something before we begin?”

“Yeah, I do actually,” I answer before laughing. “I’m kidding. No, I don’t give a fuck. What do you want? I’ll go order it for you.”

She looks shocked. Leaning forward a little, she gives me a funny look. “Are you going to poison me or something?”

“Would that stop you from eating whatever I bring back?”

“Honestly, no. I’m hungry enough to eat the ass off an elephant. So, I’ll take my chances with a little poison.”

“Youarepoison.So, maybe you’d be immune.”

“Can you keep the dick-o-meter at a low today? I’m not in the mood to deal with you.” She glares.

“It’s hard to keep it on low when my dick is so big that it’s always off the charts.” I smirk before standing. “What do you want?”

“I’ll take a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese. And a cookie dough iced coffee with oat milk,” she rattles off.

“Cookie dough iced coffee?” I rear my head back. “Huh. Never knew there was such a thing.”

“There’s, like, fifty flavors here.” She laughs. “What are you, like, aFrench vanillaguy?”

“I’m ano coffeeguy,” I correct her. “Shit’s nasty.”

Her eyes widen. “Just when I thought you couldn’t get weirder.” Digging in her bag, she holds out some money. “This should cover it.”

Ignoring her, I head to the counter and order our things. For some reason, an image of her plump lips wrapped around the straw as she drinks her coffee assaults my brain, sending an unwelcome jolt right to my cock.

I glance back at her as I wait for the dude to run my card. She’s playing on her phone, the same scowl on her face she’s had since she was a little kid. As if realizing she’s doing it, she suddenly relaxes her face, and I practically hear her mother’s voice inside my own brain, scolding her about wrinkles. Our families went on enough trips together that I heard it all.

“Uh…sir?”

I faintly hear the kid’s voice, and I snap back to reality, looking at him.

“What? Sorry,” I mutter, rubbing the back of my neck.

“Your card,” he grumbles, holding it out to me. “You can take a seat. We’ll bring it out in just a few minutes.”

“Thanks,” I say before heading toward the girl with the angelic face and the devil’s attitude.

One last time, I go over the dance that I think will work. Three times later, and Hunter is still looking at me like I have three heads. Eventually, I shrug.

“It’ll be fine. We’ll keep it simple. And if we look like morons, it’s for charity, right? I mean…fuck it.”

He eyes me over, looking amused. “What would Helena Savage think about that filthy mouth?”

“Who cares?” I say bluntly. “Okay, so I think we’re all set on this. Right? Do you have any questions for me? Like, for starters…maybe what’s left and right?”

“Fuck off.” He chuckles. “I’ll apologize now for your poor feet. They are about to take a beating.”

“It’ll be fine.” I stand, tossing my trash in the wastebasket. “You’re not going to be worse than any of the other goons on your team. Well, other than Cade. That guy can move. It’s sort of hot.”
