She looks around, taking a small step closer. “Are you, like, sleeping together?” she whispers. “Because you and I still hook up sometimes, you know.”

“No, we aren’t sleeping together,” I scoff. “But why do you ask, Paige? Are you having a change of heart? Do you want to be with me? Like, reallybe with me?” I say, calling her bluff.

Her shoulders sag a bit. “I can’t. I’m sorry.”

Staring at her, I narrow my eyes. “Yeah, that’s just what I thought.” I step around her. “I gotta go.”

“Wait, Hunter,” she says, touching my arm. “You know I love you, right? And I hope that if things change with you andher…you’ll have the courtesy to tell me.”

“Did you have the decency to tell me about the random dudes you’ve fucked since we split?” I say, turning around to face her. “No, you didn’t. And, yeah, I know all about them.” Running my hand down my face, I shrug my shoulders. “You need to figure out what the fuck you want. Because this shit isn’t working for me anymore.”

When she tries to grab my hand, I shrug her off.

“Hunter, stop.”

“You’ve got two weeks to figure it the fuck out, Paige. After that, I’m done.”

I walk off, not wanting to look at her anymore. But I realize something. Seeing me with Sutton got to her. And maybe that isn’t a bad thing.

Sutton

I wait next to the truck. Shifting on my feet awkwardly, wondering what’s happening with Hunter and Paige.

I could tell my presence wasn’t wanted. And I don’t blame her. His family always made her feel like she wasn’t welcome. And before our family’s feud, they voiced many times that they’d prefer him to be with me. The way I see it, she has every right to not want to see my face.

And while I understand why she finally reached her breaking point and left him, I also think it was the coward’s way out. If she loved him the way she always claimed…her ass would be there, ready to fight for her spot next to him. Instead, she’s settled for hooking up with him randomly, basically controlling his every move.

Seeing him walking toward me, I offer him a small, apologetic smile. “I hope I didn’t get you in too much trouble. I know the last person you want upset with you is her.”

He seems agitated as he fumbles in his pocket, retrieving his keys. Walking around to the passenger side, he opens it. “Didn’t you say you had plans tonight? I’ll drop you off so you can get to it.” His tone is sharp, and everything about him is off right now.

But it’s not my job to push for more details. So, swallowing my pride, I climb into the truck, buckling my seat belt before he reminds me to.

The ride to my place is quiet, and the dark energy from Hunter’s body radiates throughout the entire cab of the truck. I have no idea what happened or why. All I know is, it wasn’t good. Clearly.

When we pull in front of my place and he hasn’t spoken a word, I push my own door open before he has the chance to get to my side. Climbing out, I brush past him as he makes his way around the front toward me.

“I was going to get the door,” he grumbles.

“Don’t bother,” I mutter, walking toward my front steps.

“Sutton, wait,” he calls lazily behind me. “Damn it, just stop, would you?”

I hear his voice grow closer, and when I turn around, my chest damn near bumps into his.

I glare up at him. “What?” I hold my arms out. “We just had a fifteen-minute ride where you didn’t speak a word. Now, suddenly, I’m walking off, and you feel like it’s a good time for a little convo?”

When I start to turn, he grabs my elbow, forcing me to face him.

“Stop,” he growls, gritting his teeth.

“Remove your hand from my elbow, or I’m going to karate-chop your nuts so hard that you’ll forever think of me as a nutcracker.” I widen my eyes. “And it won’t be for my stellar ballet performance either. It’ll be because your nuts are gone.”

He pulls his hand away and puts it on his waist as he huffs out a breath. “I’m just…in a bad mood. Okay? Kind of like you are ninety percent of the fucking time.”

“You lowballed it, babe. I’d say, when you’re around, it’s at least ninety-five.” Folding my arms over my chest, I narrow my eyes. “I didn’t ask for any of this. And while I truly am sorry for whatever happened with Paige back there, that’s your problem, not mine. I wish more than anything that you could be with your sweet, perfect princess and I could be left the hell alone.”

“That what you really want, brat?” he rasps, and I swear his eyes float to my lips. “For me to leave you alone?”
