“Well, it happened fast.Reallyfast. But…we’re kind of dating.” I squirm around in my seat nervously. “Sutton and I—”

“Holy fuck,” he grumbles. “Your mother is going to love this. Y’all couldn’t just date someone who wasn’t your family’s enemy?”

“S-sorry. But look on the bright side. Her family is going to be even more pissed than you are.” I shrug. “That’s got to count for something.”

He chuckles. “Yeah, I suppose it does. I’d do anything to get back at those motherfuckers. Does this mean she’s coming to dinner too?”

“Is she allowed?” I half-joke.

Even though I can’t see him, I know he’s running his hand down his face, probably stressed out.

“Bring her. It’s not her fault her parents suck,” he says quickly. “Don’t worry about your mom. I’ll talk to her.”

“Thanks. I gotta run. I’ve got practice in twenty-five minutes.” I pull in a breath. “Thank you, Dad. For, uh, being cool with this.”

“I’ll be watching her like a hawk. Know that,” he warns. “Have a good week, Hunter.”

“You too,” I say, ending the call.

Well, that went much better than I’d thought it would.Which sort of scares me. Because if it went that easy, then what the hell is my dad up to?

There’s a small knock at the door, and my sister slowly pushes the door open, covering her eyes. “You’re not naked in here, are you?”

“I hope not. That would be weird since I was just talking to Dad.” I laugh. “Nah, I’m good. Come in.”

Walking in, she sits at the end of my bed, gazing around at my walls. “Word around campus is…you’re dating Sutton. SuttonfreakingSavage.”

I inhale, blowing it out. I planned to tell my sister about the arrangement. I just haven’t had a chance. I guess now is as good of a time as ever.

“Yeah, so…kind of.” I nod. “By kind of, I mean, not really, but yes.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” She narrows her eyes. “Seriously? What’s going on?”

“Strictly between us, we’re fake dating.”

She doesn’t hide the look of shock on her face. “Why? That makes no sense.”

I look up at the ceiling, figuring out how the hell to explain this fucked up situation I’ve found myself in.

“Paige is stringing me along. She’s trying to dictate my life while also living hers. I’ve had it.” I shrug. “But I love her. And I know she loves me too. This will show her I’m not to be fucked with anymore.” I swallow. “Sutton’s parents cut her off for transferring to Brooks. And this right here, well, it’ll piss them off when they find out she’s with me. Plus, she needs my help with finding out some dirt on her mom. She just…thinks her mom’s hiding something.”

“You know this is going to get difficult, right? If you think you can just fake date someone likeSutton Savageand not walk out of it an unchanged man, you’re more of an idiot than I already thought.” She stares at me, eyes wide. “You’re going to fall for her, Hunter. And then what will you do when this deal is over?”

“No.” I shake my head quickly. “No, I won’t. Is she gorgeous? Yes. Do I like hanging out with her? Surprisingly…yes. But, no, I’m not going to fall in love. This is just something I need to do.”

“So, you really want Paige to come back to you strictly out of jealousy?” She looks ashamed. “Come on, Hunter. You’re better than this. I like Paige, but she isn’t the person you’ve always painted her to be. You have to know that by now.”

“She can’t be another thing Mom and Dad take from me.” I shrug. “She just can’t.”

Pointing at me, she tilts her head to the side, eyes wide. “So, that’s what this is about. Wow.”

“No, it’s fucking not,” I snap. “That isn’t the only reason. Either way, when Sutton is around, I expect you to not be a dick to her.”

“Why would I be a dick to her?” She throws her arms out. “She and I were actually friends, dickwad. You were always an ass to her.”

“Yeah, well, things have changed. And now, as far as this world is concerned, she’s my girlfriend.”

“Jesus,” she mutters before flopping back on the bed and staring up at the ceiling. “Well…shit.”
