He set me down, placing me inside the ropes, and climbed through them himself before standing in front of me. His shoulders were huffing up and down, his face a mask of his own anger being directed back at me.

“What the hell are you doing?” I yelled.

“You threw the first punch, Apple. If you wanna fight, we can fight. Right here.” He pointed his gloved hand toward the middle of the ring and raised one eyebrow to taunt me.

I started to roll my eyes and tell him I was not fighting him. But he had a point. I threw the first punch. I started this and I couldn’t find my way out of it while keeping my dignity.

“Okay,” I beat my gloves together. “Let’s do this!”

His face almost fell, not happy with my answer. Good, let him hit me back. The pain would probably feel good.

Taking both hands, I pushed them against his t-shirt covered chest and into the middle of the ring. He backed up with ease and positioned himself in a defensive stance. He didn’t look ready to punch, he looked ready to block.

Chapter18

Levi

If she thought I was going to hit her, she was delusional. Not because I didn’t want to sometimes punch the mouth off of her, because I did. But I knew I was two feet taller and ten times stronger. She was mighty, but small, and sometimes, DNA and genetic makeup out-balanced willpower. I wouldn’t have to even try to fight, and I knew I would hurt her. I could think of other ways to shut her up than to punch her in the mouth.

But I wasn’t lying to her. I was going to keep giving her as much hell as I could on that field until she folded. After the game last week, I realized it was just the only way. She was tough, and I found it to be a fucking turn on, but I knew eventually, she would get tired of being the joke and bail.

In the meantime, if she needed to punch me, I was going to let her. I could fight fair and let her have a few wins, just as long as her wins were not on the field. In the ring, I was all hers.

“Come on,” I said to her. “Let’s fight.”

She stood up from her fighting stance and backed away into the corner. “You’re not going to fight me, are you?”

I stood up straight and looked confused. Did I not just tell her to fight me?

“You were in a defensive stance,” she sighed. “Your only plan was to block my punches.”

Fuck, she knew her shit. “Fair is fair,” I shrugged.

“How is that fair?”

“I told you. I’m not gonna quit giving you excessive shit on that field. But here in the ring, you can have some punches.”

“That doesn’t even make sense!” She yelled. “So, what if we’ve fucked, Levi! That doesn’t mean you have to be a dick. We can both do our fucking jobs.”

“That’s not–” I started to somehow explain myself without even knowing the answer myself. Luckily, she cut me off before I made something up that I would later regret. The bad part was, her answering words hit below the belt and I wasn’t prepared.

“It's Richard, isn’t it? He's making sure you run me off the field, isn't he? All that talk about being supportive of a female on the sideline, calling the game, making it easy for me to stay in Atlanta, my hometown. It’s all bullshit for the commissioner's sake, isn't it? But if I fail, the commissioner won’t be so quick to put women back in my job.”

I shook my head “no” before letting out a loud, “Fuck,” that echoed throughout the gym. “What did he say to you?”

“You already know!”

“I told you I didn't. I have my own reasons for wanting you gone, I don't need Richard to tell me to do shit.”

“What is your reason? Because we fucked?” Without letting me answer, she started to walk away. “You know what? I don't want to know.”

I grabbed her gloved hand and pulled her into my chest, putting us face to face. Both of us were breathing hard and she had every reason to hate me. Hell, I hated myself too. But I couldn’t tell her the truth, and she knew fucking her had nothing to do with it. She knew we were both handcuffed to the attraction that started between us at the bar in New York. That's why she looked at my lips while licking her own. It's why her body was becoming soft and compliant as I held her against me.

“It doesn't really matter, anymore. What's done is done,” I whispered. “So there isn't any reason to stop.”

I closed my mouth over hers and she gave in instantly. I didn’t know what she truly thought about our whole fucked up situation at work, but we both knew keeping our hands to ourselves was impossible.

We both had gloves on, so I used one on the back of her head to keep her lips on mine in case she thought about running. Not until her glove reached around and pressed into my back did I chance pulling my mouth away from hers to use my teeth on my gloves.
