The judge sighed. “I can’t leave you alone, but you have a minute,” and he proceeded to get a cell phone from his desk along with a pair of headphones, inserted them, and went to look out of the window.

“I know about your brother,” Dario whispered.

I gave up stopping the tears from falling, and just managed to bite back a sob.

He bent forward, and kissed my forehead. “This is Elisabetta and Sofia?”

I nodded.

“And Gabriel Amato?”

“Who?”

“Another mob family.”

“I met the man that's either just Tomasso’s uncle or both of ours.”

But Judge Nolan cleared his throat and Dario held the back of my neck for a second and pressed his forehead to mine, then stood and turned.

“I will not fight the divorce proceedings, but I need it delayed until the morning,” he said.

Judge Nolan glanced between us. “And is that what you want?” he asked, looking at me. I nodded and glanced at Dario, but he was already walking out of the office.

Dario

How I walked away, I would never know. I was a complete shit. I had put him in this position. If he’d felt safe to talk to me, this would never have happened.

“We need to find the boy, but once we find him, Alessandro will be in more danger,” Lucio said. With Gia on speaker, I’d told them both what had happened as Lucio and I drove back.

I couldn’t involve Marcello in this. He had given us the address of the warehouse and that was enough.

“If Alessandro was at the warehouse, then the boy must be somewhere else,” I said, drumming my fingers on the seat. “And hopefully Sofia and Elisabetta know where that somewhere is.”

“He’s also not likely to return there as they know he will be followed,” Lucio said.

“Which we are doing,” Gia confirmed.

I smiled grimly. “You have the signal?” I wasn’t sure if Alessandro was aware I’d stuck the tiny tracker under his hairline at the back of his neck, but at least we’d know where he was. It still didn’t solve the problem of the brother.

“Any reaction so far?” I asked. “Where are they?”

“Elisabetta is at home,” Gia said after a moment, “but Sofia is in her car.” I perked up. Sofia was an easier mark than her mamma. Much easier.

“Let me access her phone,” Gia said. Then he laughed. “Apparently, she is on her way to view her father’s body.”

“I’m surprised they’re not going together,” I said.

“That could have something to do with the truck that’s just arrived at Elisabetta’s,” Gia replied. “Let me run the plates.” Then he laughed again. “It’s registered to Edward’s Security. They specialize in locks, safes, even panic rooms apparently. Rookie move.”

Lucio met my gaze in the wing mirror. “Panicking?”

“I hope so. She’s clearly terrified of what’s in the safe. Get me to the funeral home before Sofia.”

“I’m going to head over to Elisabetta’s. We both know I can get in the safe, but I don’t want anyone else doing that.”

“Take someone with you,” I all but ordered. “And don’t go in or let them see you until you hear from me.” Even after all these years I hated Gia being anywhere he might not be safe.

Lucio immediately contacted the funeral home, while I knew Gia would also be issuing instructions to make sure Sofia was delayed. I had Mario in charge of at least four men in different cars that could all drive slowly or break down in an awkward place. There were only so many routes available in a busy city.
