But that's beside the point. I don't know if he's into me at all; he's hiring me to watch his dog, and I'm reading too much into it.

I'll just have to see what happens next...and it'll have to wait until after he gets back.

Chapter six

Ryan

Could I have brought my dog with me on this trip? Absolutely.

Am I doing this because I like the idea of Sophia staying at my place...?

Yes.

I tidy up my apartment in the final minutes before Sophia is supposed to arrive, Tex following me around with those damn puppy eyes that make me feel like an asshole for leaving him behind. I move over one of the throw pillows on the bed—all courtesy of Amanda, because I never even looked at a throw pillow before I moved in with her—and look down at Tex.

He's staring up at me, head cocked, brown eyes shining.

"Don't look at me like that," I mutter. "You're the lucky one—you get to sleep in a bed with a pretty girl all week."

He obviously doesn't know how good he has it. The dog woofs softly, clearly thinking I want to play.

"You be nice to her, ya hear?" I mutter.

He wags his tail.

I'll take that as a yes.

The doorbell rings and I go down the spiral staircase, opening up the door to find Sophia on the other side. She's got an overnight bag over her shoulder, her hair up in a messy bun, and she's wearing...

...fuck.

"Sorry I'm late; I got caught up at the gym," she says.

"Right," I nod.

She gives me a sheepish smile. "Um...can I come in?"

I realize I'm blocking the door and I take a clumsy step backward, holding my hand out. "Yeah, come on in," I say. "Sorry about that. I was..."

Well, I can't say what I was doing because I was checking her out. Sophia is dressed in a skin-tight black sports bra and purple jogging shorts, her legs on full display, her face flushed from exertion. She walks past me and kneels to pet Tex, and the awkwardness at the door is forgotten.

Thank fuck.

"Hey, buddy," she coos at Tex, scratching him behind the ears. "We're gonna have so much fun together, aren't we?"

She stands up, then puts her hands on her hips and her bag down on the floor. "So, walk me through it—what do I need to know to keep this little guy living his best life?"

I clear my throat, trying to shake off the thoughts that were creeping up on me. "Well, Tex is pretty easy-going. He just needs a lot of attention and playtime, and he likes to have his food and water bowls refilled at the same time every day. Other than that, he's a pretty chill dog."

Sophia nods, looking down at Tex, now wagging his tail furiously. "Sounds simple enough. Is there anything he's particularly afraid of?"

I hesitate for a moment, my mind racing. "Actually, he's really scared of thunderstorms. If there's a storm, he'll need someone to cuddle with him until it passes."

Sophia nods, her expression softening. "I can do that. So... wanna give me a quick walkthrough of your place?"

Yes. Focus on telling her how to navigate my place, not on her boobs.

Fuck, I'm like a horny teenager.
