God, I’d love to smack him.

“No, Cam, I am notthrowing in the towel. In fact… I have an agreement that we may publish.”

I stop short of telling him I have a signed contract. I’m playing with fire, I know. But he’ll want to see it and I’m not ready to tell him that Levi is the one behind the Ryder Night naughty words.

Plus, I feel like by hoarding this information, I’m sharing a secret with the handsome Levi, and I suppose his friends too. It’s just the four of us at this moment in time, and we’re a little team.

Us against the world.

Ugh. Fuck that. I need to save my job.

“I… almost have a contract, Cam.”

“And who’s the author, Amalia?” he asks for probably the tenth time.

I screw my face into an apology. “Can’t tell you yet. I’m sorry. But soon.”

His face pinches, and I realize I’m pushing my luck. But that this point, what the hell do I have to lose?

He shakes a finger at me. “End of week, Amalia Plum. End of week to get this signed. Layoffs commence next week.” He saunters off.

Fucking asshole. Who would hang something like that over an employee’s head?

Fortunately, I have better things to think about. Like my meeting with Levi later today. In fact, I am so eager to get out of the office, I gather my things to go work in a coffee shop until it’s time to head over.

I can’t stand to be here a moment longer. Which is just as well, since I might not be employed by this place after Friday.

AMALIA

I ringLevi’s doorbell for the third time in two days. Hell, maybe he should just give me a key so I can let myself in.

“Amalia.”

“Oh. Hi Henry.”

Levi’s agent steps aside so I can come in. I hope to God there’s no problem.

“Nice to see you,” he says with a little bow of his head.

Henry is the buttoned-up one of the trio. Surfer boy good looks, seriously preppy. Like one of the Beach Boys, back when they were hot.

Levi looks like a typical literary master of the universe with his pullover sweaters and eccentric sock collection. Reminds me of one of my college professors, who I had a huge crush on.

And Wyatt, well most people would run from him in a dark alley. Big, burly, wearing leather and chains. Scary shit, unless you know him, his vegetarian tendencies, and his doting mother.

Yet these guys are a posse. A crew. A grown-up gang. On one hand, they couldn’t be more different from each other. And yet there’s something that binds them.

“Didn’t expect to see you here, Henry,” I say. “You were so nice to me last week at Levi’s signing. I want to thank you.”

He waves my thanks away. “I’m… glad it all worked out. I’m just here to look over the contract Levi signed. And I’m sorry I couldn’t be more straightforward with you last week. I’m sure you understand that I had to respect Levi’s reservations. Anyway, how’d you figure out it was Levi who wrote the book? I’m dying to know.”

I smile at him wickedly. I’m not sharing my brilliant sleuthing, at least not yet. Let them wonder.

“Can’t tell ya. Sorry.”

He chuckles politely, and gestures across the room as Levi joins us. “I always tell him not to sign anything without letting me see it first. You know, because I’m his agent and all.”
