That is, if we can agree on the changes I do and do not want.

“Look, Levi, I just don’t know if the multiple love interest thing is realistic. What woman goes out with two, three, or four guys?”

Is she really asking me this?

Across the room, watching sports and listening to us at the same time, Henry and Wyatt titter, then click their beer bottles together.

“You’re joking, right?” I ask.

Her head moves back on her neck, and she raises one eyebrow, something I’ve always wished I could do.

“Why would I joke? I’m trying to make this book as good as it can be.”

Testy.

I like it.

“Amalia, what do you think you’re doing with the three of us guys?”

She brushes a piece of lint off her sweater. “Oh. Well, that’s different.”

God, I want to kiss her so badly.

“How so? Are you telling me you’re the only woman in the world who likes being with more than one dude? Because I can tell you that’s wrong. Completely wrong.”

She shakes her head like I’m annoying the hell out of her, which I suppose I am. “Fine. Keep it as is.”

I flip to her next page of notes and scan the document. “Now, about this?—”

But she holds her hands up, stopping me. “Never mind. It’s good as-is. I was just a little worried about the woman who got gang-banged on her birthday, but I’m sure you’re going to saypeople do that all the time. Or even that you’ve done it yourself, which I really don’t want to know anything about.”

I press my lips together to keep from laughing and don’t dare glance over at Henry and Wyatt, who are enjoying my ‘business meeting’ way more than they should be.

“Jesus, Levi, you sound like a goddamn perv with all those dirty stories,” Wyatt says.

Henry snorts.

“You guys need to mind your damn business over there,” I call. “Hey, why don’t one of you losers get Amalia and me a couple more beers?”

I watch them nudge each other until one finally gets up and heads for the fridge.

Wyatt hands a beer to Amalia and holds one out for me, a few inches beyond my reach.

Dick.

“C’mon, man. Give me my beer.”

He starts to laugh and turns toward Amalia. “Levi, tell us about the last time you were with a girl wearing a flannel nightie and granny panties who called you ‘Daddy.’ We know that’s your thing.”

I jump up, snatching my beer out of his hand before he can pull it away again, and take the opportunity to grab a seat on the sofa next to Amalia.

She smiles and clicks her laptop closed. “You’re a smart man, Levi Maverick. I hope you’re not sorry you didn’t take any of my suggestions for your book.”

“Well, you’re a smartwoman, Amalia Plum. I hope you’ll find that it’s better because Ididn’t.”

She cuffs my shoulder while the guys guffaw. “You writers really are an insufferable bunch. You know how many times I’ve had to argue about making a passage in a book better?

“That’s because you weren’t working with me. Enjoy the experience,” I say, tapping my beer bottle against hers.
