“Yeah. Shit is right. You need to take the cash we drained from the account and get the hell out of town. It’s the only way for you now.”

“What account?” Laura asked, unable to stop herself.

Her father shot a glare her way. “Stay out of it. You’ve caused enough trouble.”

“I can’t leave her and our baby,” Isaac said, cutting back into the conversation. “I won’t leave her. She’s mine.”

Jenson rested a hand on his shoulder. “She’ll never listen. Not anymore. You know what you need to do.”

“What does that mean?” she asked, her words shaking. “You’d let him kill me?”

Icy silence was his only response as he kept his focus latched on Isaac.

Terror and shock turned her stomach. Her father had always been a monster, but no way she’d ever imagined he was so vile. That he’d give the order to her executioner. “You can’t mean it. You can’t really be okay with him killing me. Killing your grandchild.”

Jenson shrugged. “You’ve forced my hand.” The sound of an approaching car stopped any more heinous words. He stormed toward the window and peeked past the curtains blocking the front yard from view. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Isaac, get Laura out of here and keep her quiet.”

Isaac stormed toward her and grabbed her arm, yanking her back down the hall.

Alarm dug her heels into the floor. “I’m not going with you. You can shoot me right here.”

“Dammit, Laura,” Jenson sneered. “Go. Now.”

“Why?” she asked, adrenaline causing a surge of strength she’d never felt before. “So you don’t have to watch your daughter be murdered?”

A vein ticked along the long column of his throat. “Laura,” he drew out her name like he had when she’d been a child, doling out threats and demanding obedience.

She lifted her chin, locking her narrowed gaze with her father.

Isaac jammed the gun against her throat. “Move!”

Her body tensed, preparing for the moment of pain before her life leaked from her body. She closed her eyes and rested a hand on her belly.

Sorry I couldn’t protect you, little one. Mommy loves you.

The sound of the door swinging open and her father’s muttered curses opened her eyes. Her mother stood in the doorway, a gun in her hands and devastation contorting her face in a way Laura had never seen.

“What the hell?” Isaac yelped.

The cool feel of metal left her skin as Isaac pivoted to face Nicole. This was her chance. She jammed her elbow into his gut and stomped hard on his foot.

“Oof.” He released his grip and stumbled backward.

A gun went off, the sound vibrating her body and stealing her senses. She stilled, waiting for the explosion of the bullet to take her down, but nothing happened.

She chanced a quick glance over her shoulder. Isaac laid on the ground, blood pouring from some unseen wound.

“Run!” her mother screamed.

Laura took off as fast as she could toward the open door.

Nicole pointed her weapon at Jenson, who charged forward and grabbed her wrist. He twisted her arm. Her mom yelped.

Laura hesitated. She wanted to help her mom but if she stayed, she had no doubt her father would kill her.

“Get out of here!” Nicole yelled, as if sensing Laura needed the extra push to leave her behind.

She shimmied past her wrestling parents, blocking the grunts and cries. Tears stung her eyes and her heart threatened to crack in two, but she couldn’t think about what was behind her. She had to focus on getting far away, saving herself and her unborn child.
