Miles flinched. “No!”

Logan and Lucy stared.

Miles flushed. “I’m sorry. I—I would like to keep him if that’s okay.” He squatted by the basket and picked up the puppy.

A faint frown wrinkled Logan’s brow as Miles hugged the puppy defensively to his chest. “Have you ever owned a dog?”

“Yes.” Miles lowered his gaze, his tone strained. “He passed away shortly before I became…ill.”

Logan’s stomach twisted.Wait. Is he sick?

He was about to ask Miles if he was okay when he caught Lucy’s warning look.

“In that case, why don’t I get some paperwork ready so we can register him and book him in for his vaccinations?” the practice manager said warmly. “Do you know what you’re going to call him?”

Miles straightened. “Oh,” he mumbled. “I hadn’t thought about that.”

His crestfallen expression had Logan biting back a smile.

He realized he liked watching Miles’s face change with his emotions.

It makes me want to find out what he’ll look like during sex.

That thought sent a shiver down Logan’s spine and made his belly knot.

Shit. This guy really does push all my buttons in the right way.

By the time Lucy finished registering the puppy, Miles’s trainers had dried and the storm had all but passed. Logan was about to suggest he drop Miles home when Lola the mastiff arrived with her owner.

“It’s okay,” Miles protested when Lucy offered to take him instead. “Honestly, my house isn’t far.”

Logan reluctantly saw Miles to the door, surprised by what he was feeling.

He’d wanted to spend more time with him.

A couple of cars pulled into the parking lot as Miles stepped out onto the porch. The practice staff were arriving ahead of the afternoon clinic.

Pepper woofed, a sad sound.

Miles stooped and scratched the hound’s head. “Thanks for looking after him, Pepper.”

Pepper propped her forepaws on his knees and licked his face. The puppy joined in. Miles chuckled.

The sound shot straight to Logan’s gut.

He forced himself to smile and offered Miles his hand. “See you soon.”

Miles rose and shook his hand.

Electricity sparked between their skin.

The hairs rose on Logan’s nape.

Miles’s breath caught, his lips parting and his pupils dilating with the same heightened awareness heating up Logan’s blood. He snatched his hand away.

“Thanks for everything,” he said in a flustered voice. He turned and practically ran down the steps.

Logan watched him leave, his heart racing. The look on Miles’s face had been unmistakable.
