Pepper jumped out of Tristan’s arms and scampered down the slope, her low woofs echoing against the snow laden trees. They followed, Hunter retracing his steps swiftly to grab the blankets and hot flasks while Drake took a crowbar out of the trunk of his Jeep.

Miles fell on his knees when they reached Logan’s pickup. He peered through the chipped windshield, his heart slamming against his ribs.

A moan tumbled from his lips. “No!”

Logan hung limply in his seat, his belt locked tightly around his chest and hips. A trail of blood had congealed on his temple.

He was pale and motionless.

“Let me take a look,” Drake said urgently. He looked in at Logan and shuddered. “He’s breathing, Miles.” He clutched Miles’s shoulder. “He’s still alive!”

Tears blurred Miles’s eyes.

“Let’s get this door open,” Drake told Tristan grimly.

They climbed on the pickup and used the crowbar to try and pry the damaged door free. Wyatt and Hunter made their way over to the other vehicle.

“They’re alive too!” Wyatt shouted a moment later.

He and Hunter helped a dazed, elderly couple out of the car. The woman’s leg looked like it was broken and the man had a nasty injury to his head.

Miles flinched and looked around when the pickup door clattered onto the snow covered bank. He scrambled up beside Drake and reached for Logan.

“Don’t!” Drake grabbed his hand. “He hurt his head. It’s dangerous to move him.”

Miles’s nails dug into his palm as he slowly retracted his arm.

Drake carefully checked the pulse in Logan’s throat. He sighed, his shoulders sagging.

“Strong and steady,” he murmured. “I think he’s just knocked out.”

They covered Logan with a couple of blankets. Tristan helped Miles down onto the ground and gave Pepper to him. The dog whined and fretted in Miles’s arms.

The twenty minutes it took for the first ambulance and fire truck to reach them were the longest of Miles’s life. He spent every second of them sending a silent prayer to whoever God happened to be listening as he gazed blindly at Logan through the broken windshield.

CHAPTER26

Logan wokeup with a splitting headache. He opened his eyes and groaned when bright light pierced his vision.

His chest hurt and his mouth felt like something had died inside it.

Someone sucked air close by. “You’re awake.”

Logan realized he was lying in a hospital bed. He looked around carefully.

Drake was rising from one of the chairs in the room.

Lucy startled awake beside him. Tears pooled in her eyes when she saw Logan. Her face crumpled.

“I’m so sorry!”

Logan’s last memory flitted before his eyes. Hispulse quickened.

He recalled rounding a bend as he neared the foot of the mountain and headlights coming at him from the other side of the road. He swallowed.

That’s right. I was in an accident!

“It wasn’t your fault, Lucy,” Logan managed. He sat slowly and winced.
