“I looked at the card,” he admitted.

“Okay?” I wasn’t sure what he was trying to insinuate. “Do you have, like, a photogenic memory? Did you write down my card number?” I replied, wondering if he was implying he was going to steal my information.

“I think you mean photographic?”

“That’s what I said,” I replied, scanning the memories in my brain and wondering if I actually said something else. I would refuse to admit it either way. “Just know, if you do have aphotographicmemory, I can cancel the card in a minute. Then there would be no apron shopping spree for you.”

He chuckled. “No, God, no. I don't want your money. I meant I looked at your name. Violet.”

“Oh. That makes more sense.” I chuckled. “Bummer on the aprons though.”

He ran his hands through his hair and cocked his head to the side. “Violet is a really beautiful name.”

I felt my heart beat faster and my palms dampen. “Thank you.”

“Any nicknames?” he asked.

“Umm… well my mother only calls me Violet. She always says, ‘What is the use of naming a person if you’re just going to call them by something else?’ Other than that, my friends call me Vi,” I replied, not admitting that by “friends” I’d actually meantonefriend.

He hesitated for a moment and I wondered what he was thinking.

When the silence became awkward, I spoke out, saying, “What about you?” at the same time that he said, “Hmm… I think we can do better.”

Do better?

The space between my eyebrows narrowed, and I placed a hand on my hip. “What do you mean ‘we can do better?’”

His gray eyes squinted in thought. “Okay, hear me out… I think you need a new nickname.”

I placed my hands on my hips. “You don’t like my name?” I said, eyebrows raised.

“No, no, that’s not what I meant. I love your name. Violet. It’s perfect. But Vi? It doesn’t seem to fit you.”

“Oh, and you know this after knowing me for five minutes?”

He shrugged nonchalantly. “I don’t see ‘Vi’ when I look at you. I think you should let me give you a nickname.”

I was confused but intrigued, desperate to hear more. “Okay, what do you suggest?”

He pondered for a moment, his eyes squinted as though he already knew the answer. “Little One.”

I let out a hearty laugh. “Little One?”

“Why not? You’re tiny!” He patted me on the head and I swatted his hand.

“Ever think you’re just really big?”

We both chuckled then were quiet for a moment. There was a distant look in his eyes, and I wondered where he had gone. I was about to change the subject when he finally said, “What about Lettie?”

I giggled. “Lettie? How’d you come up with Lettie?”

“Vi is a very typical nickname for a girl named Violet, but you don’t really seem typical. You need something different, something that stands out. You want to be different, don’t you?”

“Doesn’t everyone? Being the same seems so boring.”

He nodded. “Why do you think I took up baking?”

“You mean it wasn’t just for the aprons?”
