She shrugged. “It’s silly, really. I asked the man if I could volunteer at the clinic this summer.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think that’s silly at all.”

“You don’t? The guy kind of looked at me like I had two heads when I asked him.” She licked her fingers.

I chuckled slightly. “Yeah, that’s Teddy. I can imagine you walking into his clinic, looking like… that… would probably make him confused. But I think it’s a great idea.”

“Yeah,” Lettie said, nodding. “Yeah. I think it is.” She repositioned on the blanket. “You know, it means I will be spending some more time in Aveline this summer. Since the nice man at the clinic said he would be happy to have me.”

I scrunched up my face in disgust. “Well, that just sounds terrible.”

Lettie pushed my arm, sticking out her tongue.

“No, I’m kidding. I think I could get used to seeing you so much. But I have a very serious question…”

“What’s that?”

I pulled my lips in. “Are you going to wear this every time?”

She scoffed, “Uh! No! School is out at the end of the week and then I won’t see this thing for the entire summer, and it could not come soon enough.”

I bit my lower lip, squinting my eyes. “Hmm… bummer.”

I winked at her, and her jaw dropped.

“Tuck!” She hit me again and we both lay down, laughing.

She looked over at me, her hair draping over her like an auburn blanket. “Hey, didn’t you tell me you had something to show me?”

“I like your friends,”I said to Tuck as we made our way back to Aveline in his truck.

He looked over at me. “Yeah? Well, they like you too. Darcy usually doesn’t like anyone, and she took to you like she’d known you her whole life.”

I raised my eyebrows up and down. “Well, I am extremely likable.”

Tuck’s eyes moved from the road and onto me. “I can see that.” I watched as he turned the wheel slightly. “So, how will your parents feel about you coming to Aveline and working at the clinic this summer? Will they be okay with it?”

I laughed entirely too loudly, and a snort that would make my mother gasp in fright escaped. “Jeepers, no! They can’t find out about Aveline at all. No way. My parents would never let me out of their sight if they knew I was here.”

“Jeepers, huh?” Tuck’s lips were in a side smile. “That bad?”

“Ha ha,” I mocked. “Laugh it up.”

“I like it. I think I’m going to start using that. Jeepers!”

I snickered. “Okay, okay. Moving on.”

Tuck turned the wheel to the right. “And how do you plan to get here all summer? Are you going to sneak out?”

I bit the inside of my cheek and shrugged. “Pretty much. They don’t really ask where I’m going as long as I fulfill my obligations.”

Tuck’s smile grew wide, and I felt my cheeks rush with heat at the way his eyes fell on me.

“What?” I asked.
