Legion shook his head. “How could I not notice?”

Alana’s eyebrow arched. “Are you kidding me? Your magic is like a nuclear explosion. You hold the power of the entire dragon species, not to mention the aftereffects of the druid bomb. Siphoning from you was like taking a drop from the ocean.”

Kell glanced at Legion. “That is true, but what has changed? Why is she failing so quickly now when she was able to siphon Legion’s power and go unnoticed for centuries? She couldn’t have been taking that much.”

Alana shrugged. “I don’t know. Adara keeps me on a need-to-know basis. Unless it’s info about an artifact I need to acquire and the wards surrounding it, we don’t speak.”

Mara tapped her lips with her knuckle. “I think it is us.”

Legion touched his wife’s arm softly. “The mated druids?”

She shook her head. “No. Just the druids. You power the dragons and their magic, but we need the temple for ours. As more druids emerge, the strain on Adara is increased.”

Alana leaned toward Mara. “I think you are right. When I first started acquiring artifacts, it was one every year or two and they were lower-level items. After you emerged, I had to grab one after six months. It has been almost monthly for the last five months.”

Legion sighed. “Why didn’t she maintain the connection with me? I would have shared my power with her until she was returned. Why put Alana in this position at such a young age?”

Mara touched his arm. “She needed me to have my magic back. It needed to...”

“What is it?” Legion asked his mate.

“I failed my mom’s test because I didn’t have my magic until Legion destroyed the connection between him and Adara. I assumed my minor TK ability was connected to magic. It’s not. That is just a skill I possess. When Legion destroyed the connection to Adara, it started the process of my magic returning, but Mom tested you that day. My magic was undetectable because it was in the process of returning to me.”

Alana nodded. “That’s highly likely. Your TK could still be a result of your magic. Generations of magic passed down have to erupt somewhere. You just didn’t have enough at the time for the spell to latch onto. I am sorry, Mara.”

Mara shook her head. “I don’t blame you for doing as Mom asked,” Mara said.

It went unsaid that she blamed Alana for what happened after Alana found out that Mara was the seer. “Thanks.”

“If she is slowly deteriorating because of our emerging powers, what caused this surge? The immediate power drain. Did one of us do something?”

Legion sighed. “The other realm is disintegrating. It has become more taxing on Adara to maintain it. We must find a way to strengthen her connection to us.”

Alana sighed. “You can’t. Not until she is returned to this realm.”

CHAPTER10

Kell stood and went to the large kitchen. He had been staying at the cabin since his awakening and it had felt like home until he laid eyes on Alana. He poured a glass of juice and grabbed some meat from the fridge before grabbing the bread. “I will make some sandwiches.”

Legion shimmered in his mind.We need to know more about this book her mother passed down to her.

I know. I am waiting to see if she offers the information.

I don’t believe it is in Alana’s nature to do so.

She didn’t betray Mara. His need to defend his mate was ingrained in his soul.

It was not my intention to condemn her. There is more to this than the book and the temple realm failing. It is my hope that if we get Alana to open up about magic and how she was sent on her quests we will get to the bottom of her fear. I do not believe it is of Mara but for her. She has been protecting the druids, but from what, I am unsure.

Kell spread some mustard on the bread before adding the meat and lettuce.I should not have assumed your intention was to call out my mate. I am... unsettled.

It is a difficult time for your dragon. He sees his future in Alana and does not understand why she remains unclaimed. We will get to the bottom of Alana’s fears. Mara suspects her sister is hiding something, but is not quite ready to forgive her.

I understand. He put the sandwiches on a plate and returned to the table. He passed one to Alana and was pleased when she snatched it up. She was thin, but he hadn’t realized she had never passed up an opportunity for food. How many meals had his mate missed?

Mara cleared her throat. “All this time, you knew about Adara and the druids. You even knew her realm was failing and that we would have to emerge to save her. Did Mom know everything?”

Alana took another bite of her sandwich. She was halfway done and neither Legion nor Mara had grabbed one. “Most of it. I told her everything I had learned back then, including my conversation with Adara. After I procured the first artifact, she watched me transfer it to the temple.”
