Mara’s eyes filled with compassion. “Why didn’t you tell us? That is no way to live. You must be exhausted.”

Kell stared at her, but she didn’t meet his gaze. “She is. She fell to her death in the cave that held her circle and would not call to me despite her injuries being fatal. If we didn’t have such a strong telepathic connection, I would not have gotten to her in time.”

Alana shot Kell a dirty look. “It was a momentary lapse in judgment. I was just tired.”

“Oh, Alana,” Mara whispered.

Alana threw her hands in the air. “This is why I didn’t want to tell you.”

Kell’s gaze narrowed on her. “It wasn’t because you thought Mara wouldn’t forgive you. It is because deep down you knew she would. You cannot forgive yourself, but you were a child. This dark used your youth against you and by the time you realized you were strong enough, you felt it was too late.”

God, she hated that he was right. She was trapped in a cage of her own making. “I didn’t know what he was until I met Legion, but that doesn’t change the fact he can track me.”

Legion approached Alana, holding out his hand. “May I see this rune? I wish to send some energy into it so I can see how the magic is dispersed.”

Alana reluctantly offered her arm to Legion. He touched the rune and a slight warmth traveled up her arm. He let her go after a few seconds. “It is a dragon rune, but it has been modified. You don’t speak with this dark telepathically, do you?”

She shook her head. “Only Kell.”

“He used a disbursement spell on it. It floods the area with magic that increases over time. When you are on the move, it doesn’t build up enough for him to detect it.”

Kell rubbed his forehead. “The rune is why Alana was able to reach me in my slumber. The dark inadvertently connected us.”

Legion nodded. “He couldn’t have known Alana had a mate. He used the only magic he knew of that could track an adolescent druid.”

Kell approached her, and she hated the look of failure on his face, as if he had done something to cause her dilemma. “I am sorry, Alana. I should have realized a young druid couldn’t reach out to a dragon while he slumbered without some kind of magical assistance.”

“This isn’t on you. Weren’t you listening? I called him to me.” She patted her chest hard, emphasizing her last word.

Kell took her hand. “This is all on him. Tell me his name. Allow your mate to rectify this grievous error on his part. No dragon terrorizes my woman.”

CHAPTER12

Alana had kept this identity a secret since her mother died, and even the Krane matron hadn’t learned his name before she passed. “He has used a few names, but the most common one to pop up is Breggar Night.”

Kell growled. “Breggar was never a dragon who followed clan law. Even when he was a silver.”

Legion nodded. “He was disrespectful to his parents and Magnus. I was not surprised when he left the caves and turned dark. I am surprised he is helping Allorin. He had no love for the mages.”

Alana met the dragon leader’s gaze. “How can you be sure he is working for Allorin? He has tried to nab me on several occasions in the last two years. I have never seen another dragon or the mage with him.”

Kell rolled his shoulders. “Breggar has made several attempts to abduct you and you have told nobody about it?”

“I’m used to it.”

Kell’s eyes flickered with crystalline fire. “I am not sure if I should tie you up or kiss you.”

Alana’s body heated at his words and a series of erotic images played through her mind of her tied up. She was very much a willing participant in those images and Kell’s voice whispered in her mind.

Careful little fox. I am more than willing to make those fantasies come true.

Alana glanced away, but she caught the look of amusement on her sister’s face. “Tell me about Breggar. What does he want with me?”

Legion rubbed his chin. “I remember him studying with his mother. She was a powerful druid, but she experimented with some mage magic and was chastised for it.”

“What happened to her?”

“She and her dragon mate died when the druid bomb went off,” Legion said.
