“You got it, man.”

* * *

After everything Scarlet had been through, I decided to sleep on the couch. She was sound asleep when I got off the phone with Easton and I didn’t want my getting in bed to startle her.She needed her rest, it was the only way she was going to begin to move past everything she’d been through.Scarlet being tired and run down was only going to make matters worse.

Before I went to sleep, though, I texted Damon. One of his buddies from his time serving came out and opened his own securities firm.I needed them to install surveillance cameras and any other security equipment they deemed necessary to protect Scarlet.I wasn’t going to ever leave her alone in the house, of course, but the extra precautions couldn’t hurt. They were going to squeeze me in because of my relationship with Damon, so his crew should be stopping by later this afternoon. That meant I wanted to make sure we were out of the house, so Scarlet didn’t have to be around it all.I’d tell her what she’d come home to, but didn’t want her to be around when they installed everything.

I slipped into the bedroom, breakfast in-hand, making sure not to wake her in case she was still sleeping. The light was streaming in, but she was under the covers, looking like she was tightly wrapped in a cocoon.I couldn’t help but smile at how adorable she looked.I figured I’d leave the food on the desk in the corner of the room and come back later.Whenever she woke up at least she didn’t need to come downstairs for sustenance.

Then she stirred, though.“Colt,” her sleepy voice called out to me.

I couldn’t deny how happy I was that she was awake, but I also didn’t want her to think she had to get up for me.“Morning, baby.”I sat on the edge of the bed and planted a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“What time is it?”she asked, moving to see the clock.

I answered, “Nine a.m., but you can go back to sleep.”

“No, no,” she insisted.

“Scar, you’ve been through a lot.No one would blame you for wanting to get a little more shut eye.”

“Colt, I had the worst nightmares.I don’t want to go back to sleep.I’d rather start my day and move forward from all of this.”

She looked at me with motivation and strength in her eyes and I couldn’t deny her what she wanted.“Okay, what do you propose?”

She sniffed the air.“Well, you’re probably too polite to say anything, but I sort of smell of sweat mixed with the perfume I wore last night. So, I guess I’d like to take a shower, get dressed in new clothes, and then we’ll go from there.”

“Sounds reasonable,” I said, moving out of her way so she could get up.

“Wait,” she said, grabbing my arm.“Where do you fit into all of this?”

I quirked an eyebrow.“What do you mean?I’ll just wait downstairs for you.”

“But you want to take a shower, too, right?”

I nodded.“I could probably use the freshening up.”

She looked at the stubble on my face and giggled.“It only makes sense then that we conserve water.”

“You want to conserve water?”

“Yes, for the environment.”

“You’re using the environment as your way of telling me you want to have shower sex?”

Scarlet blushed.“Well, when you say it like that it sounds like I have an ulterior motive.”

I moaned and ripped the sheets off her, pulling her out of bed and into my arms.“Hey, what are you doing?”she demanded.

“I can’t wait another second to get you clean, Scar.”

She giggled.“Sure, that’s what this is all about, getting me clean.”

“Why, of course, you’re the one who mentioned you smell and now that you’re this close to my nose, you really do smell, Scar.”

She swatted my butt.“Hey, mister!”

I walked us into the bathroom, where I put her down in front of the shower. She folded her arms.“You know now that I think about it, maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all.You know, with you being so arrogant and cocky.”
