I sighed, contentment washing over me.“Okay,” I replied, and pushed back from his chest so we didn’t end up tangled in one another again instead of starting our day.

I gripped both sides of the counter and then ran one of my hands over my lips, swollen from his kisses.“That man is going to kill me,” I said quietly to myself, then giggled because I was the happiest I’d been in a long time.

I opened the medicine cabinet in search of my deodorant.“There we go,” I whispered, pulling it out and making something on the side of it tumble down.

My eyes dropped to the inside of the sink where the pink case fell. There it was staring back at me, the pink case filled with my birth control pills. It lit a lightbulb in my head almost immediately and I was suddenly sick to my stomach.“No fucking way,” I said a little too loud.

“What’s wrong?”Colt called out.

I quickly picked it up and hid it behind my back.He came toward me and I only shook my head and faked a smile.“Nothing.I just got a news alert on my phone, that’s all.Two celebrities got married and it’s big news.”I lied and sounded like an idiot.Great!

“You’re lying,” he claimed.

“What?”I shrieked out.Now I really sounded suspicious. What was wrong with me?

He crossed his big, burly arms and leaned against the doorframe.“I can do this all day, Scar.Tell me what’s going on.”

“Fine,” I blew out.I had one more chance to make this right. So, I thought fast and tried my hand at another lie.“I just realized I have to go to the gynecologist today.”

“Why?”he asked, growing concerned.

I wanted to reach out for him, but I was holding the damn pill case in my hand.“Just have to refill my birth control pills, that’s all.”

“Oh.”He relaxed a bit.“Geez, you gave me a scare for a second there.”

I chuckled.“I gave myself a scare.”

“For a second there I thought you were going to say something else.”

“That I was pregnant?”

“What?”he nearly choked.

I laughed.“Just joking.Ha, you should’ve seen your face.Priceless.”

“Yeah,” he said, not amused.“I’m sure. You nearly gave me a heart attack, Scar.Don’t do that again.”

I crossed my heart with my one free hand.“Never again.”

As I did, though, I knew that there was a very real chance that we could be having this conversation again within the next few weeks. And it may very well be true then.We hadn’t used condoms in heaven knew how long because I could’ve sworn I was on birth control, but I was supposed to take the last one in here last month and then get a refill. Now, though, I was visiting the gynecologist for a whole other reason. The one reason I didn’t expect.

I put the case in my jean pocket and went into the bedroom.Whatever the news the gynecologist had for me, I just needed to know. One way or another.“Do you want me to drive you?”Colt asked.“I mean, not that I really want to go to the gynecologist with you, but you know, if you need me to, I will.”

“Thank you very much,” I responded, “but you’re off the hook.I can drive myself.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yeah. It’ll give me some time to think about my next project I’m doing for work.Really, I can use the alone time.”

“All right, well then in that case I think I’ll stop by to see Damon at the shop before my job interview this afternoon.”He leaned over and gave me a kiss.“I’m just a call away if you need anything.”After everything that had happened at the courthouse and knowing the threat wasn’t totally gone always left him on alert.“Anything at all, Scar,” he reiterated.

I rested my hand on his cheek and let him lean into it.“Colt, I’m fine, really.Don’t worry about me.”

He exhaled.“I don’t think I’ll ever stop worrying about you.I want you to be safe, that’s all.”

“And I am.I’ve never felt safer.”I added, “And that’s because of you.You make me feel safe and protected.”

I watched as his face relaxed and he grabbed his phone off the bed to put in his pocket.“That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
