“Oh, please,” Damon quipped, “I’ve been in hospitals before. The food sucks.Even the Jell-O tastes like crap.If you’re going to get better you need food for the soul.”

I pulled back the wrapper to uncover a cheeseburger.“And a cheeseburger is supposed to do that?”The aroma filled my nose and I immediately rose from my current position in the bed.“I’m gonna be sick,” I commented.

“That bad, huh?Deacon picked them up for us.I didn’t think it was bad.”He took another large bite out of his.“What, it’s better to eat with company.”

I covered my mouth as I gagged.“Damon, the smell,” I insisted, “please.”

I watched as though a lightbulb went off then.“Oh, shit.Sorry, Scarlet.I forgot.”

I tried to get out of bed and he watched as I struggled, held up a finger, and brought the trash can over to me.“Here you go.”

He held back my hair as I couldn’t contain it anymore and threw up in the trash can.“Ow,” I groaned, as his hand brushed over the raw skin on my collarbone.

Damon pulled away.“Sorry.Again.”He shirked.“I’m the worst, Colt should be here.”

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.I couldn’t wait to take a shower, I thought to myself.“No, you’re not.Really, Damon, I owe you one.For everything you’ve done for me.Brooke can’t get off work, and well I have few others to call on as you know.”

“It’s fine, really.You’re family.”

I nodded in understanding.“You know, you’re pretty great,” I told him, as if he didn’t already know—which I hoped he did.He really was a good guy.

“It was the Army.Taught me a helluva lot.”

I regarded at him seriously.“I doubt that. It’s in your DNA.It’s who you are.”

“True, and the Army kind of fucked me up.”He laughed it off, but I wasn’t buying it.

I smiled.“I’m sorry.”

“Hey, you don’t go into the Army naive to the fact that you may not come out a different man.You plan for the worst,” he said, a far off look in his eyes.

“Plans change,” I told him, gesturing to my belly.

He chuckled.“I know you and Colt didn’t plan on this, but it was going to happen inevitably. You two are going to get married and you’re going to have a lot more children.”

“He’s proposing?”I nearly jumped out of the bed with excitement.

Damon immediately shook his head profusely.“No, no, I’m not sure.I mean, yes, maybe, some day.Damn, you work for the FBI?”

I chuckled.“Don’t I wish.Seriously, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t starting to dream of forever with him. It’s hard not to.Your brother is something special and I love him very much. Now that we’re having this bundle of joy together, nothing would make me happier than to start our lives together already. But he might have to actually come back around,” I intoned, hoping like hell he’d give and say something about what Colt was up to.I wanted to get home and find him there if he couldn’t be the one to break me free from this hospital hell.

“See, and that’s why Colt’s in New York right now trying to square everything away with Rafe and Nick.He wants to make sure that you’re not in any danger. From here on out, you and this baby are his top priority. And, of course, I’m going to be the coolest uncle ever.”He just kept on rambling, and didn’t notice he’d done exactly what I was hoping for, spilling the beans on my man.

When he did notice, he nearly choked.“Shit! You didn’t happen to catch all that, did you?”

“I’ve had a good time with you and all in his stead, but that doesn’t stop me from being pissed. How could you?”I demanded an answer.“I asked you repeatedly and you kept telling me I had nothing to worry about. But I knew better. He wouldn’t just leave me in a hospital like this. And you haven’t left my side, but to go home and shower.Damn it, Damon, you knew! Why didn’t you say anything before now?”

“Because I told him not to,” Colt’s voice both startled me and filled me with immense joy.I nearly hopped out of bed and threw myself in his arms.“Colt!”My voice was filled with emotion and love.Lots of love for the man I’d missed.

Colt made his way over to my bedside and held onto my hand.“Don’t be mad at Damon.I told him not to say anything.”

“Well then I guess I’m mad at you.Why would you do something so stupid, so reckless?”

Colt kissed the top of my forehead then.“Because you’d been through enough and I didn’t want to add any more stress to that.”

“Plus I told you not to.”

“And that.”Then he continued, “But, baby, he needed to answer for what he’d done. And he did.In fact, it’s all over.I didn’t even have to do anything.Easton charged them his morning. It turned out once I let him in on what happened, he pulled a few strings, manipulated Nick’s receptionist, who also knew what was going on and being put through hell, just not as bad as you were.Anyway, they’re both behind bars and she’s been relocated for now.”
