She quickly scribbled something on the paper and handed it to me.“That’s my number.Give me a call and we can set something up.It’ll have to be over the phone, though, because I’m getting on a flight to New York tomorrow.”

“Yes, the phone is fine. Thanks!”Honestly, I didn’t care how we did it.I just knew this was going to be a piece my boss ate up.She was going to love it.

Ginger smiled.“Great, we’ll chat soon then.”

“Yeah,” I told her and gave her a head nod as she walked away.

I turned to Colt and screeched.“Another jump up and down moment?”he inquired, knowing full well it totally was.

“Yes!”I screamed and then looked a tad embarrassed when I realized others stared.“Sorry,” I mouthed to no one in particular.

“This going to catapult your career?”

“You’ve been watching too muchHow to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” I joked.“No, but, seriously, my boss is going to love this and thus me.”

“It’s nice to hear you so passionate about your work,” he said.

I laughed.“It’s nice to be passionate about it.It’d been a while since I could even think about my next story.”

“Because of Nick?”

“Because of everything.Nick, Rafe, Brandon, the injury.I didn’t want to think about anything related to work. But, now, I finally feel like my life is getting back to normal.Nick and Rafe are behind bars, where they belong.Brandon is gone and I’ll have to live with that forever. You’re in my life and that’s never changing so long as I can help it.”

“Me, either.”He pulled me close.“I’m never going anywhere, Scar.”

That was the thing, though.Did he ever really know?“I’ve been doing some research,” I began and he stopped me.

“Oh, no.Scar, research is never a good idea. The Internet is not always the best place to be.”

“I know, I know,” I insisted.“But they said as an officer, the Army can ask you to come back if necessary, if they need you.”

“I’ve done my time.My contract is up.”

I eyed him, knowing he wasn’t telling me the full story.“Technically, yes, they can.But there’s no real obligation there and I don’t want to go back.I have too much right here I can lose.”

“You’re not losing me,” it was my turn to say.

“You say that now,” he said, “but I almost did.”

I shook my head, not realizing until right now just hard all of this must’ve been on him.He just looked so tough, like nothing ever got to him.And he was so good at making it all about me that I never once thought about how he was feeling since my accident.“I’m sorry, Colt.”

“For, what?”He looked confused.

I sighed heavily.“That you thought you might lose me.That I made you feel that way.”

He brushed the pad of his thumb over my cheek.“Yes, you scared me.Yes, I thought I might lose you.And the thought of it made me want to die.But you never have to be sorry. It wasn’t your fault. You had no control over it.And once I knew I hadn’t lost you, I was over the moon.”

I kissed him then.“So it’s decided.I’m never leaving you and you’re never leaving me.”

“Sounds like we’re stuck with each other,” he promised and sealed it with a kiss.

“What do you say we get out of here?”I asked against his lips.“We have a doctor’s appointment to get to.”

He moaned into me and lifted his head.“It’s still a bit early, and you should probably eat with all the medication you’re on, so what about a stop first?”

We began walking to the car when I had a sudden craving.“Okay, I’m craving fried pickles and a milkshake.”

“You want those two things together?”
