I grinned.“I do.”

Then she smiled and mentioned, “I can seriously go for more of that cheesecake.”

I chuckled.“That’s really what you want right now.”

She laughed, too.“Well, I can think of one other thing I’m craving.”

“Yeah?Anything I can help with.”

She pulled me into her.“Hmm, I think you just might be able to.”

We kissed under the stars then, totally entangled in one another, totally in love with each other, and all I could think about was the future I was planning with the woman in my arms.Forever wouldn’t be long enough, but it’d have to do.

Epilogue

Damon

Two weeks later

The aroma hit me first, and it smelt like sugar cookies and my childhood. That could really mean only one thing—Mom was extra cheerful today.Which, of course, was because she was welcoming Scarlet into the family.I was actually quite happy for my brother. We had all been through enough shit and seen enough, thanks to the Army, that we deserved to be happy. And I was glad that Colt was getting everything he wanted with Scar.

Deacon met me in the hallway, stopping me before I snuck in the kitchen to find out where those cookies were and snag one or two.He slapped me on the back.“They’re in the living room with everyone else,” my brother said.

I scoffed.“Please, I knew that.I was just going to wash my hands, that’s all.”I hated it when my big brother knew he was right.I tried to rarely ever let it happen.

He quirked a brow.“Sure you were.”

I rolled my eyes.“Whatever, man, why are you over here then waiting for me by the door like a creeper instead of in there with the happy couple?”

He shook his head.“That part’s over. You’re late.Mom broke out the family albums.”

“Oh, shit! Why does she always break those things out?She showed all of my baby photos to Kelsey when we were dating in high school and that was bad enough. But, now, we’re grown ass men, is she crazy?”

Deacon laughed.“Don’t worry, she’s breezing right past all of our baby photos and honing in on all of Colt’s.”

“Good,” I said, “that’s very good.”

“Don’t get too excited. One day that’ll be your fiancée looking through albums of you splashing around in the bathtub or riding your tricycle.”

I sighed.“You seem to have accepted your fate.”

“It’s Mom,” he shrugged, as if that said it all.

“That’s right and it’s my right as your mother,” Mom responded, as she walked up to us.“Don’t you make me drag you boys into that living room. What are you two doing lurking in the hallway anyway?”

“Deke’s looking for food. What else is new?”I swatted his arm.“Geez, man, there’s a celebration happening in the living room and the only thing you can think about is your stomach.”I rolled my eyes to drive home the point.Man, I would make a fantastic actor, I thought to myself not for the first time.

Mom came up behind me and pulled me by the ear.“Hey!”I said, “What are you doing?”

“Get in there,” she answered and pushed me into the living room.

On my heals, Deacon and Mom followed, but I was spotted immediately by the beaming bride-to-be.“Oh my goodness, Damon, I’m going to be your sister!”Scar announced. She came over then and embraced me in the biggest hug ever.

“Uh, you’re squeezing me,” I said. When she didn’t give up, just held tighter, I coughed to show her just hard she was embracing me.“Sort of need to breathe over here.”

She chuckled and let go.“Sorry.I’m just so excited!I can’t believe I’m going to have a big family. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

I smiled then.“You’re definitely going to have a big family,” I teased, “but I really am happy for you, Scar. And it’ll be nice to have a sister to call on for dating advice. You know, you women aren’t easy to understand.”
