I laughed.“Not this long, but it is fun to piss you off.”

He rolled his eyes.“I’d like to eat before next year.”

“Better watch out then, because I can take just that long.”

“I’m sure you can.”

As I was reaching for the towel, the phone rang. The loud shrill of a noise making me go on high alert.Every time that phone rang it left me shuttering. It was never a good thing.Especially with Wyatt still over there fighting for his country. My eyes immediately met Deacon’s and I knew we were both thinking the same thing.

Mom led the pack as everyone piled into the kitchen and just stared at the phone like it was a rattlesnake.“I’ll get it,” Deacon offered.

I watched as Mom closed her eyes then and clutched her hands over her mouth. The silence that filled the air was making me more nervous.Deacon hadn’t said a word since he answered and I never could read him that well, so I didn’t know what he was thinking.Scar walked over and squeezed Colt’s hand who looked as nervous as I felt for Wyatt.Dad stood in the back, looking as cool as a cucumber.

“Thank you, sir,” I heard Deacon respond to the caller.“Will do.”

When he put the phone back in the dock, we all patiently waited for the news he was going to relay, praying our brother was okay.Deacon remained calm, his facial expression unchanging.“I’ve been ordered to return to the Army.”
