“At the expense of our happiness?”

“Maybe she doesn’t view marriage as something that makes people unhappy.”

Her shoulders relaxed and she released her breath in a long sigh.“You’re right. She thinks marriage is the only thing that’s going to make us happy. But I never thought she’d go to such extremes.”She glanced at him.“So how do we fix this?”

“I’m not sure.Even if Mimi takes it back, the rumor has already spread ...and turned into something else entirely.”

“Well, that explains what happened last night at the Hellhole and all the flowers that arrived on our doorstep.”She shook her head.“The men of this town are stupid if they think all they have to do to get one of us to marry them is send a few flowers or ask us to dance.”

“Most men are stupid when it comes to courting women.”He hesitated.“Although it might help if you didn’t flirt with them.”

Sweetie’s eyes narrowed.“Excuse me?”

“Men think you’re interested when you get drunk at a bar and dance with them ...or cuddle with them on a porch swing.”He knew he was overstepping his bounds, but the image of Casey’s arm perched on the back of the porch swing so close to Sweetie was still front and center in his brain.

“Cuddle?”Sweetie stared at him.“I was not cuddling with Casey Remington. And even if I was, that’s none of your damn business.I thought I’d made it clear that I’ll kiss whoever I want to kiss.”

“Even if they don’t want to be kissed?”

Her eyes widened.“Are you saying you didn’t want to kiss me, Decker Carson?”

He should let it go and leave. But he wasn’t good at doing what he should where Sweetie was concerned.“You were the one who kissed me.”

She took a step closer and leaned in.“And you were the one who didn’t want to stop.So don’t you dare play the victim with me.”

Since she knew the truth, he should apologize and get the hell out of there. He certainly didn’t need to rile her more. But he couldn’t seem to stop himself from asking the question that still plagued him.

“Whydidyou kiss me?”

She stood there for a long, tension-filled moment before she finally spoke.“Because I’ve never been good at resisting things that are all wrong for me.”

He wished like hell that his heart hadn’t done a cartwheel at just the thought of Sweetie being unable to resist him.But it did and he couldn’t ignore it.Or her.

“You’re right,” he said as he took a step closer.“We are all wrong for each other.”

She tipped her head up and her tongue swept over her bottom lip, leaving it wet and too tempting to look away from.“Just plain wrong.”

He leaned in.“One hundred percent wrong.”

If possible, the first brush of their lips was even more electric than the night before. But this time, he wasn’t surprised. He now knew kissing Sweetie was like stepping into the eye of a tornado: deep inside him, everything was calm and still like he was right where he was supposed to be, while the rest of his body was a whirling, trembling cyclone of need.

With a groan, he surrendered to the storm and tugged her into his arms, kissing her like he’d wanted to kiss her since stepping out of his car.

Her arms came around his neck and her fingers threaded through his hair, knocking off his hat.Like last night, she held on like she never wanted to let go.He prayed she wouldn’t.He wanted to be absorbed into her soft skin and remain there forever. The sexy sound that came from deep in her throat had him backing her up against the wall of the barn so he could press closer.

She drew away from the kiss and her head fell back as she spoke in an aching whisper that made him feel reckless and wild.“Say it, Deck. Please say it.”

He trailed kisses along her neck to her ear where he sucked in the soft skin behind her lobe.“Sweets.”He nipped her with his teeth.“My Sweets.”He came back to her lips and hungrily kissed her again.

The sound of slamming car doors penetrated his sexual haze, but not enough to make him pull away from the hot woman in his arms.

Nor did the high-pitched squeals of females greeting each other.

It wasn’t until five giggling Holiday sisters stepped into the barn that he was finally able to pull away.

ChapterThirteen
