“I’m sorry too. I don’t know what happened with you guys, but I promise there’s nothing between Maci and me. She’s just a friend. I really like Lexy. Even if she isn’t having it yet.”

“Keep trying.” Mack grabs his shoulder and squeezes it like they are lifelong friends sharing a moment and talking about me as if I’m not still standing right here.

“Lexy.” Troy shifts his attention to me.

“Can you leave please? I need to work, and I can’t handle this right now.” Before he responds, I head to the back to get some ice for the night and forget about everything else.

As soon as the last customer leaves, Mack slides into my bar area to help me finish closing. And to talk, I’m guessing. Although I could do without that part.

“Tell me about Troy.”

“I swear Maci isn’t into him, and he’s not into her. He’s not who you have to worry about.” We both know that’s Dean.

He walks over to where I’m facing away from him, wiping the bar down, and spins me toward him. “I know, Lex. Sorry I freaked out. I don’t want to know about him for that reason. I want to know about him because of you. I’ve never seen you interested in someone like this.”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Kind of feel like you do. Your choices are Maci, or me, so who is it going to be?”

I sigh in resignation. “This is stupid.”

He grins. “That you have a crush on someone? It’s cute.”

“Shut up. I don’t need you to be my girl friend here. You want me to talk or what?” I snap.

“Okay, sorry.” He takes the rag from my hand. “Why are you so stressed about this?”

“I don’t know. It’s weird. I’ve been attracted to him since we met. I thought maybe it was just a sex thing.”

“And it’s not?”

“The sex is great.” I add another thought quickly before he gets in his head about that. “But in like a… because we are connected kind of way. It’s gross.”

“By gross you mean great?” He laughs, wiping off the counter in front of us as I glare at him. His demeanor changes, seriousness washing over him. “I’m failing to see the problem here.”

“Everyone in my life makes relationships seem so complicated.”

“And your sample size is what? Two people?” He smirks.

“Three.” I shoot him another glare.

“You can’t count Maci and me as separate for this.” He laughs. I know he’s hurting right now, so the fact that he’s giving me his attention on this without letting his feelings interfere means a lot. I don’t want to have this conversation, but I should probably figure this out.

“Fine. But still.”

“So you’d rather be alone forever than try a relationship?”

“I’m not alone. I have you.”

“Yeah, and I love you, but I don’t want to have sex with you. No offense.”

“Thank God for that.” I laugh.

“What are you going to do when I settle down along with everyone else our age?”

I hadn’t thought that far into my future. I never do. I collapse into my arms on the bar top with a groan.

“Look, Lex. Relationships can be hard. Life isdefinitelyhard. At least when you find the right person it makes the hard things easier.”
