Me:What did he do now?

Lexy:I picked my phone up to let you know I’d be a little late, and this POS came out of nowhere, ripped it out of my hand and slammed it on the bar. My case’s last leg is officially broken.

Me:I can’t stand that guy.

Lexy:You and me both.

Lexy:Tonight is crazy. I’ll still be a while.

Me:Okay, I’ll see you when you’re done.

By the time I clock out, Lexy still hasn’t responded. We’re supposed to meet at her place when she gets off work, but I can’t wait. The past few weeks since she talked to Maci and leaned into our not official relationship have been great, and I’m always anxious to see her. I was hoping she’d be starting her closing work by the time I showed up, but even with only fifteen minutes until last call, she’s still slammed. You wouldn’t know she’s busy by the calm she brings to her chaos, but the fact that she hasn’t noticed I walked in tells me otherwise. The past few times I’ve been here it’s like she could sense me, immediately looking up when I walk through the door.

Her blonde ponytail swings over her shoulder as she reaches for Blue Curacao behind the register. I don’t know why she doesn’t keep that in the well since she uses it for her go-to drink when someone doesn’t know what to order. Her system obviously works for her though, so who am I to judge? I’m just here to watch her work and love every second of it. Her sex appeal is off the charts with her jean shorts a little extra shredded in the front and a black Jack Daniel’s shirt cut across the top to hang off one shoulder, revealing a glimpse of her bra strap. I feel lucky as hell knowing I get to rip that off her later.

“LEXY! HEY!” Fuck, I know that voice. Todd, the douchebag, screams to get her attention on the opposite side of the bar. I was hoping he’d be gone by now.

“What do you want?” I hear her snap, without taking her eyes off the drinks she’s making.

“You mean besides you?”

My fist clenches at my side. I haven’t felt this defensive in a long time, not that I need to be concerned. Lexy doesn’t seem any more bothered by him than usual, but I really don’t like this guy.

“It’s last call, Todd. Tell me what you need, or get lost.”

“Three shots of Malibu.”

I catch her smirk from here even though it’s dark. She thinks it’s hilarious he won’t drink anything with a bite. She looks up to make sure there are actually three people waiting on shots, knowing Todd is far too drunk to need that many. At least that's my assumption because I can tell how wasted he is from here.

She lines up three shot glasses before tipping the Malibu and running the stream of alcohol above them. Pushing them forward, Todd and two of his equally douchey looking friends each take a tiny glass before holding them up. “To rattlesnakes and condoms, two things I don’t fuck with!” They cheers.

I choke back a laugh. I’m surprised I haven’t heard that one before. Too bad it didn’t come from someone else.

All three guys tip their shots back then slam them down on the bar. “Another!” Todd yells into the air even though he’s talking to Lexy.

She turns around, her hand moving to the horizontal hatch within the bartop that can be lifted to let her out of the enclosed space.

“No.”

“Come on, Lexy. Take one with me.”

She ignores him, lifting the hatch enough to slide through before setting it back down again. She must need something from the back.

Todd steps in front of her, preventing her from getting past him. “Sugar, I promise I’ll give you a tip this time. More than just the tip actually.” He grabs her wrist. I shift off my seat but freeze as Lexy pulls away, releasing herself from his grip.

“Don’t fucking touch me,” Lexy growls. I can’t see her face, but from here I can tell my girl can handle herself.

“Don’t be such a bitch,” Todd barks back. With his words, his hands are firm on her waist, yanking her to him. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

As I leap from my bar stool, I all but black out, barely catching the sight of his hands attempting to force their way under her shirt as he holds her to him. In the next moment, I’m on their side of the bar, and my hands are on him, my fist flying into his face with a crunch as I punch his nose. I’m only conscious of what I’m doing enough to make sure I don’t hit Lexy in the process. I go to take another swing, but he’s already on the ground, blood streaming through his fingers covering his face as he cries out in pain.

“What the fuck, man,” he growls.

“She said not to touch her.” I wait until he locks into my gaze before taking the step into Lexy, who stands there totally stunned.

“Hey.” I close the distance between us, the palm of my hand resting against the side of her face, gently pulling her gaze from Todd on the floor, to me. “You okay?” I ask as soon as her eyes find mine.

Her arms are between us, and I feel her grab a fistful of my shirt as she leans into me and nods. She takes a deep breath. When she pulls back, a different emotion has washed over her. Anger, maybe. Justified. Wait, why does it seem directed at me?
