“She’s not moving much,” he observed.

“I don’t think they hire them because they can dance.”

“She doesn’t want to be up there.”

“Most people have to make money,” I informed him, then instantly felt like an idiot. It was hard to remember that he hadn’t always been a rich, aimless man.

“Of course. Sex work is often fairly lucrative. I’m just wondering why men consider this titillating. These women dislike them.”

He turned his attention to Cassie and Michael for a few minutes, not saying a word.

“Why are you here, Loïc?” Was I repeating myself? I was pretty sure I’d already asked, but I was so flustered he was here, I wasn’t sure what to do about it. Michael was pretty fucking vanilla. The last thing I wanted was for it to get out that I was ‘screwing around on my wife’ with some guy who treated me like shit.

“This is a business meeting?” he asked quietly, not seeming impressed with Michael.

“Yes, of course,” I whispered back.

“There’s no ‘of course’ about it,” he said, echoing Richardson’s words from earlier.

Was he somehow listening to my conversations? No. How could he?

“You seem to know everything else about me. You must know strip clubs aren’t my thing.”

“For all I know, you’ve developed a new kink,” he said a bit louder, flashing me an obnoxious smile.

I gave him a dirty look, hoping Michael hadn’t overheard.

Loïc leaned closer and whispered in my ear. “Relax. The music is loud enough he can’t hear what I’m saying, and his attention is completely focused on the woman in his lap. I could murder you right here and he probably wouldn’t even notice.”

“Why is murder your first inclination?”

“I thought it was a safer word than what I’m really thinking of doing.”

Damn him. I didn’t want to get turned on in the middle of a meeting.

“I need to speak to you outside,” I continued, needing to get him away from Richardson.

“You don’t want me to help you with this investor?”

“What on earth could you possibly say that I haven’t already said myself?”

“You forget—I was raised to do this work.”

I excused myself, telling Richardson I needed to talk to Leduc about another project. Richardson was so engrossed in his flirtation he barely acknowledged me.

He led the way out the side door that exited into an alley.

“What did you drag me out here to say?”

“Stay away from me when I’m trying to work. I don’t want my coworkers or investors to think I’m cheating on Tarryn.”

“Noted.” That wasn’t an agreement, but he didn’t look inclined to argue.

“You need to stop pretending you’re going to get Tarryn pregnant.”

“But Iamgoing to get her pregnant.”

I felt my hands curl into fists at my side, wanting to wipe the smirk off his face.
