“What are you doing here now then?”

“I’m here to fuck you, but there’s time for that later.” I laid the stack of pages safely aside on the coffee table.

“Loïc!” she admonished, but her eyes were shining.

“Tarryn!” I mimicked.

“I need those.”

I pulled the throw from her lap and grinned in delight at her pink flannel PJs that were polka-dotted with white unicorns.

“Those pajamas are hot.”

“Shut up.”

I pulled her to her feet.

“I need to let Valor know you’re here, and I need to finish memorizing this monologue before I do anything with you.”

“Nonsense. It’s Friday night.”

“Spoken like a man who isn’t back until the last two episodes of the season.”

“I can’t believe they postponed killing me off until then,” I teased, knowing she was probably still stewing about it.

“Bullshit. They all fell in love with you the moment they spotted you on set.”

“What’s not to love?” I winked. “They sent Mal off on a mission to retrieve that magical orb for you,” I said more seriously. “I’m sure you’ll get to kill him off the minute he gets back.”

“Bullshit. Just watch—they won’t kill you, then you’ll get main character status at the beginning of next season.” Her mouth twisted in exasperation, but she didn’t seem angry. “What on earth are you wearing?”

I backed from her and spread my arms, turning for effect. “Pants. A shirt.”

“A black crop top that says ‘mayhem’ in gold sequins, and black leather pants that are laced up either side, leaving a generous peekaboo of skin, and apparently no underwear. Why do I get the impression we’re not watching a movie tonight?”

The words might have sounded judgmental but she looked ready to lick every inch of me. Perfect.

“It was this, or a kilt and no shirt. I couldn’t decide.”

“I’m assuming we’re going to a club, but I wouldn’t put it past you to dress like this for a PTA meeting.”

“Let me get you pregnant, and I’ll let you choose what I wear to PTA meetings.” I gave her a wolfish grin, and admired the mottled pink of her cheeks.

“That is simultaneously both the weirdest and hottest thing anyone other than Valor has said to me.” She laughed. “Why didn’t I use going to church as the example, instead?”

“Can you imagine me stepping over the threshold of a church? I would burst into flames. Instantly.” I shook my head in disapproval. “Think of the lives that would endanger, Tarryn—even I’m not that evil.”

“What are the goggles for?”

I touched the goggles that rested on top of my head and shrugged. “They keep my hair back when I’m dancing. The other option was a man bun, but I’ve heard those are passé.” The woman deserved to know me, so I threw in some truth. “I never got to wear accessories when I was growing up, so now I’mobsessed. I’m planning to be buried with every single bangle and scarf I own.”

Her eyes went from bright to sad. What I’d said was supposed to be funny, but Tarryn had a heart like Minnow’s. I’d never compared them before, but their personalities weren’t dissimilar.

Grinning—possibly maniacally—I tugged her into her bedroom and flung open the doors to her walk-in closet.

“You could wear the dress you wore the night I met you.”

“You remember what I was wearing?”
