“I know.”

“That doesn’t make you happy?”

I shrugged. “Beauty can be a double-edged sword.”

She snorted. “It gets you in the door, only to discover there’s a casting couch in the next room?”

“Yes, and does anyone bother to learn who’s beneath the skin?”

She shrugged. “Sometimes.”

“Those few who bother…they mean so much.”

She finished lining my eyes and pressed her forehead to mine. “Yes.”

My heart—the stupid organ—it twisted. Did she see me? Did she give a damn?

It was starting to feel like maybe she did.

“Men target you?” I asked. Of course, they did.

“Not as much anymore, but for a while when I was in my late teens and early twenties, I thought Valor was the only decent man in the world.”

She drew away and hesitantly perused her lipsticks. “What color?”

“Surprise me.”

Iwished she would give me the names of these men so I could kick their asses for hurting her. She and Valor had probably dealt with them. I shouldn’t dredge up the details.

“I’m sorry they did that to you.”

“I’m sorry for what you’ve been through, too.”

When she was done, I checked her handiwork in the bathroom mirror. I looked better than beautiful—I looked like a world of trouble. She came to stand beside me, and I draped an arm around her shoulders. We looked right together.

“Shall we?” I asked.

“Can I wear underwear?”

“Only if you let me choose them.”

She grinned, and I tugged her to her dresser, getting her underwear drawer right first try. Since I’d gone through them before when she wasn’t home, I knew exactly which ones I wanted to see her in, so I pulled them out and shook them free of their fancy folding before helping her into them.

Damn it, her eyes kept lingering on me. She wanted me, and it was making it even more difficult not to lay her out on the bed and lick her until she screamed.

“Shoes, and then let’s get moving,” I recommended, readjusting my throbbing dick. “Tonight is fordancing.”

Her sigh of disappointment was almost my undoing.

When we arrived at the club, the line stretched down the block, but the bouncer waved us in, past the people in the queue.

Music blasted out the door. Our ears would be ringing by the time we left.

“Did you bribe that guy?” Tarryn was probably hoping the people glaring at us from the line-up wouldn’t give us a hard time later.

“No. He must have recognized you.”

“I doubt it.Rose Redhasn’t caught on here.”
