She snuggled against my chest, and let me sway us with the music. I wasn’t good at hugs, but for some reason, dancing made it different. It made it easier.

“I guess so.”

We parted, but I put my arm around her as we left the dance floor and ascended the stairs to leave.

Out in the cool night air, Tarryn shivered. I pulled her closer, molding her to my body. My ears rang and itched, and the music’s beat lingered in my head.

“We should grab a taxi. Those shoes aren’t good for a hike.”

I spoke to the doorman, but wasn’t happy about the fact that he couldn’t give me an estimated wait time. She was already getting cold.

“Let’s walk,” she said. “It’s only about thirty minutes from here, and I need to get to bed.”

“You’re impatient for my tongue.”

She made a sound of embarrassment and strode away, making me jog a few strides to catch up.

“Hey, girls!” a man called. We turned to see three men step out of a doorway not far from us.

They looked taken aback when they realized I wasn’t female.

“Can I help you?” I asked mildly.

“What’s a girl like you doing with a guy like this?” one of them said, flicking a finger at me. They had accents, but not Czech ones. “You should spend the night with some real men.”

“What? I’m not real?” I asked Tarryn, in mock outrage. “You told me I was a real boy!”

“I like my man just fine,” Tarryn called back, forcing a smile. Her body was tense. “I have to work in a few hours.”

She was trying to hide her fear of them behind a polite mask, but instead of being worried about these three assfaces, it was my temper that worried me.

“Come on, sweet thing. Ditch the pretty boy and come party. Our place isn’t far,” another one said a little too heartily.

I opened my mouth to say something, but she replied first. “My boyfriend and I aren’t looking for a party, but thanks for the invitation.”

The circumstance wasn’t ideal, but hearing her claim me as hers was almost worth it.

One of them tried to grab her arm, and I stepped between them, knocking his hand aside and nudging her behind me into the shelter of a recessed door.

“She said no thank you.”

The shorter one’s laugh was an ugly sound. “What the fuck is a guy in lipstick going to do about it?”

Against three men? It would depend on how good they were at fighting and how little they cared if they died.

The urge to tell them off or fight them was strong, but it would be easier and safer to talk our way out of this.

“Why don’t you go look for women who are interested? I’m sure you’ll find someone else to party with.”

The one who’d tried to grab her already, tried again. This time I caught his hand and pushed his thumb back. He yelped and reclaimed his hand, then flexed his thumb and scowled at me.

“Grabbing at people is rude,” I pointed out.

“You fucking cunt!”

I yawned, trying to clear the muffled ringing sensation in my ears. Although I loved loud music, I didn’t enjoy its aftereffects. In a potential fight, not being able to hear well past the hum could be problematic.

The shortest one lunged at me, and threw a punch which I easily deflected. His attempt had been almost taunting, as though he assumed I wouldn’t be able to defend myself.
