He snorted. “No. You keep putting me in my place.”

“And what place is that, Loïc?”

“Absolutely anywhere you want me to be—any way you will have me.”

“What if I never want to submit to you the way I do with Valor?”

“I don’t need that from you. I may make requests that sound like demands, but I never want you to do anything you don’t want to do.”

He was too perfect—too hot and sweet. How much of this was real?

“You haven’t forgotten that I’m married, I hope.” I knew it would sour the mood of this ‘date’ but it wasn’t fair to lead him on. No matter how fun Loïc was, I wouldn’t leave Valor.

I’d reached the cone section faster than I had realized and took a bite of it, almost sighing. I didn’t take time for things like this very often.

When was the last time Valor had taken me on a date?

“Maybe your husband has forgotten that you’re married, but I haven’t.”

“Sometimes, a person’s career takes the front seat in their life. It’s like that for both of us right now, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love each other. We’ve been together for a long time, and I understand you don’t get that, but it doesn’t mean I’ll let you undermine our relationship.”

He sighed. “I apologize.”

“You have so much time on your hands that you don’t understand what it’s like trying to juggle a demanding career and a long-distance marriage.”

“True.”

“Maybe you should consider looking for things to do. You’re too young to be retired. I think you’re bored, but you don’t exactly fit in with the Florida shuffleboard crowd.”

“They would love me.”

“You’d probably give a few people heart attacks.”

“Ah, but they would die happy.” That smile of his…ugh. This entire man should be illegal in public.

The metaphorical hall pass Valor had given me with him was smoking like an overused cartoon credit card. I would have to make sure I didn’t overstep somehow and make Valor uncomfortable.

“Did he tell you what happened after we left his office?”

“Valor? Yes.”

“What did he tell you?”

“Everything.”

“Did he tell you I showed up at his house again in the middle of the night that night?”

“No.” I raised an eyebrow. “But only because that didn’t happen. He would have told me.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want you to know everything. Maybe he’s keeping his feelings for me secret from you.”

“Valor tells me everything. We don’t keep secrets from each other.” Maybe we didn’t tell each other every little thing the way we had in high school, but something like that? No.

“Valor isn’t as honest with you as you think,” he mused.

“Or you’re lying to me because you like making trouble.”

He huffed a breath, then started to laugh. “Damn. Not even a glimmer of doubt in those beautiful eyes.”
