He smoothed back Loïc’s hair. He was a heartwarmingly tender gesture—one I would have loved to see under different circumstances.

“Come on, Leduc. I know you’re in there. You’re scaring us.” Valor sat on the chair and pulled me off the edge of the bed and into his lap.

“The nurse said someone tried to abduct him?” I asked quietly.

“Yes.”

“What happened to you?”

“I caught the guy trying to get Loïc out the door.” He scowled. “I could tell Loïc wasn’t okay—he couldn’t even stand up. I chased them down and fought the guy.”

Fuck. Why hadn't I suggested they go to a movie, especially after what had happened the last time we went to the club.

I realized I’d missed some of Valor’s injuries. His knuckles were split, and half of his face was turning a deep purple. Why was an ice pack sitting unused on the nightstand?

“Why aren’t you using that?”

He waved away my concern but let me push the ice pack into his hands. Dutifully, he pressed it to his face.

“Did they say anything about your injuries?”

“They want me to go down for an X-ray at some point to make sure my cheekbone isn’t broken.”

“What about a CT scan or an MRI or something?”

“We’ll see.”

I leaned into him gently, not sure how much bruising he had under his wrecked T-shirt. “You’re a hero for jumping in and rescuing him like that. You’d been drinking, and it’s been years since you’ve been in a fist fight.”

“He was tough, and I’m out of practice. Maybe I should add boxing to my workout regimen.”

“But you won.”

“No. He got away, but at least I stopped him from taking Loïc with them.”

“Them?”

“There were two of them, at least. Maybe another one with a vehicle. Who knows?”

“Still, it was brave of you to take him on alone.”

“What was I going to do? I sure as hell wasn’t about to let them abduct him. Besides, the women from the bachelorette party ran over to help. They were hitting him with their shoes, and one of them tagged him with her mace.”

“Where the hell were the bouncers?”

“One showed up after the guy made it out the door. I think the guy’s buddy started a fight to distract the bouncers. I didn’t want to leave Loïc alone, so I didn’t chase him.”

“You made the right decision. Loïc needed you, and that fucker might have killed you to get away.” Fear curdled my stomach. I could have lost them both tonight. “Do the police think they’ll catch the guy?”

“One of the bachelorette women dropped her purse’s AirTag in his hood. The police used it and found him and his buddy not far away. They’re already in custody.”

“Severin wants to kill them.”

“Good. That makes two of us.”

Chapter Twenty-Five: Tarryn

It was handy having Jack’s face painted over almost every door in Loïc’s—our—house. It meant that when they showed up, I didn’t need to wonder who they were.
