Hewas safewording?

He pulled away and got to his feet. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides.

“Are you okay?” I asked. It felt weird checking on him, considering the circumstances. Valor had never safeworded with me before. If he didn’t want to do something, he just didn’t do it.

“Did I go too far? Did I hurt you?” There was real fear in his eyes. “You looked so scared.”

“I’m okay. I know I have a safeword.”

He was shuddering. “I think I liked it too much. I like it when you’re scared. I like to hurt you.” French started pouring from his mouth, but he wasn’t speaking to me.

Someone banged on the door.

Startled, my gaze flew to it.

“Go to the bedroom, Loïc.”

He didn’t move. I wasn’t sure he could hear me.

I retrieved my trench coat from the floor and put it on, then cracked open the door, hoping theperson wouldn’t be able to see inside.

My neighbor from across the hall was staring at me, brows raised so high it looked like they might never come back down.

“You are okay?” she whispered in broken English. She was dressed for work, but only had eyeshadow on one eye.

“Sorry.” I felt my face go horribly red. “My friend had a night terror.”

“Oh.” She looked skeptical and hesitated, studying my expression, maybe waiting for a sign that I was being held hostage.

“Everything’s fine, Agata. Thanks for checking on me.” I gave her an apologetic smile.

She dropped her voice to an almost inaudible whisper. “You need me to call thepolicie?”

“No, no,” I whispered back. “He’s awake now and very embarrassed.”

She smiled, looking relieved. I’d have to remember to send her a thank-you gift. It was brave of her to come to the door.

“Thank you for checking on me. I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

She waved a hand. “Is nothing.”

“Have a good day.”

She smiled and headed back into her apartment. I closed the door and turned back to look at Loïc.

He wasn’t in the living room anymore.

“Loïc?”

Nothing.

The apartment was empty.

He was gone.

Worried, I waited a while, but then focused on getting cleaned up.

Like a stray cat, he'd come back when he felt like it.
