“Did you burn yourself?” She took my wrists in her small hands and inspected me, a small crease of worry between her brows.

Emotion welled in my throat, and I pulled my hands back like she was what might burn me.

What if my mind lured me away someday, and I accidentally hurt her? My head was like a nightmare-fueled fairyland—when I came back, I never knew how long I’d been gone.

I could have burned down the apartment with her in it.

Jesus.

“Stupid, stupid boy,” I murmured to myself.

“What?”

“I’m so sorry. I—I got distracted.”

“It happens.”

“Maybe I’ll stick to apologizing with takeout instead of trying to cook. I’m not good at it anyway.”

“Youaregood at it! You didn’t even know how to turn the element on when we met, and now look at you. Maybe if you want to cook, you can wait until I’m with you? I can be your sous chef, and I can shut things off if there’s a distraction.” She cupped my face in her hands and kissed my forehead. My eyes burned and blurred.

“Don’t,” I managed to choke out.

Reluctantly, she let go, but I still felt the lingering warmth of her touch on me, banishing Martine to hell.

“I need to call Valor, and I need to finish my shower.” I hadn’t even realized she was in a towel. “I’m glad you came back.”

“I’m sorry I left instead of making sure you were okay,” I whispered, not trusting my voice. “I needed space to calm down.”

“We can talk about it or not. It’s up to you.” She stood in the doorway. Was she hoping I would look at her? “Coming?”

Collecting myself, I stood and pushed my hair back from my face.

“Absolutely.” Mocking Valor on a video call while I groped his wife was one of my favorite games in the world.

“So, you really did record what you did to me last night?”

“Yes.”

She gave an adorably aggravated grumble. “What am I going to do with you?”

I winked at her, feeling more like myself again. “Absolutely anything you’d like.”

Chapter Five: Valor

[Chaos] I sent you a gift. Check your cloud

[Nymph] He’s here again. You might want to call me before you watch what he sent you

Missed call from Tarryn

Shit.

Although I’d been home, I’d been so engrossed in work, I hadn’t heard my phone when it vibrated hours ago. It felt like someone had rubbed sand in my eyes, and my neck hurt from being hunched over my laptop.

What had that weird fuck done now?

Although I was curious, I stretched and headed for the bathroom, needing to take a piss before I started dealing with his bullshit. That task was easier said than done, considering my dick was already anticipating what might be waiting for me.
