“I’m asking you.”

He pulled me closer. “Can it wait until later?”

My stomach dropped.

“Just tell me.”

“They want us to go in now. There’s been a change.”

That wasn’t unusual, but the way he’d said it gave me the impression he knew what the change was and thought I wasn’t going to like it.

“Are they killing someone else off, too?” I doubted it would be me—I was pretty sure I had main character shield, but then again, in the current world of television, who knew? They could kill me off and give the show to someone else.

My heart was in my throat.

“The ratings for the episodes that just aired were so high that they’ve decided to keep me on longer.” He grimaced apologetically. “I’m sorry. I swear I didn’t do this on purpose.”

“Are they replacing me with you as the main character?”

He huffed a laugh then realized I was serious. “No! That would make no sense. Why would they make a villain the main character?”

My shoulders slumped in relief.

I loved my job.

Maybe for a second, I’d thought about how it would be to go back to auditioning for things between being a powerful man’s stay-at-home wife. Little baby booties might have been involved.

Loïc narrowed his eyes. “If you want out, why don’t you quit?”

“I don’t want out!” I said maybe a little too sharply.

He gave me an assessing look. He could always see through my bullshit. It was disturbing having someone in my life I couldn’t effectively tell little white lies to.

“Maybe part of me misses setting my own schedule and spending more time with my husband. I could start trying for a baby again.” I shrugged. “This show is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. It’s everything I’ve worked toward all these years, but I think it’s still normal to sometimes resent the stranglehold it’s taken on my life.”

“I suppose.” He pulled me closer. “I guess that means I’ll be here longer. Damn.”

“Maybe it’s time you get your own place.”

He frowned. “Get my own place? Why would I do that? I’ll make a little space for myself in the closet, and you’ll never know I was here. I’ll pay for everything.”

“Are you going to sleep in that closet, too?”

I wasn’t sure why I was complaining—he never actually slept in my bed. Hell, I’d never seen the man sleep.

“It might be a tight fit for the two of us, but if that’s what you’re into, I’m game.”

I sighed, pushed him away, and went to the fridge where I grabbed the water jug. I poured myself a glass and chugged half of it. When I was done, he was watching me with rapt attention.

“Having you stay here temporarily while we filmed a few episodes was one thing, but you can’t move in with me. What about Valor?”

“What about him?”

“I’m married. Remember?”

“How can I forget? You throw it in my face several times a day. It’s a weird thing to do, considering how often you let me fuck you.”

The man had a point.
