“Yes, Sir.”

She turned the camera around again, and I saw she had covered the test window with the corner of a paper towel. Her hand hovered over it.

I held my breath.

The camera switched to her face again.

“If I’m not pregnant, I’m going off my birth control.” There was no teasing in her tone, only a statement of fact.

Her solemn determination jolted me. Normally, we would talk about a decision this important, but I couldn’t blame her for taking a stand on this. She’d been waiting for a long time for me to get my head out of my ass. As much as I liked to be the one leading our relationship, I’d had a mental block about this long enough.

“Good.” The word surprised me, even as it came out of my mouth. I wasn’t saying it to get ahead of the situation either. I found I really meant it.

“If it’s negative, my heart’s going to be broken.”

“If it’s negative, we will start trying again—and if that doesn’t work out, we’ll see any specialist we need to see.”

“What if I am, and it’s Loïc’s baby?”

What if itwasLoïc’s baby? Would I be jealous? Yes. Would I take it out on the kid? I wasn’t a fucking monster. Besides, we’d talked about using donor sperm if I was the one making conception difficult. This would be better. Loïc was smart, handsome, and wasn’t a complete stranger. If I let him into my wife’s body—into mine too—what was the big deal about letting part of him grow inside her? She wanted children desperately. If I could love my wife as much as I did, it made sense that I could also love a kid we raised together, no matter who planted the seed.

I closed my eyes and thought about Rodrigo’s family, and the beautiful blue eyes and grumpy disposition of their little daughter. Rodrigo loved that baby without hesitation, even though he had to know she wasn’t his bio kid.

“Can you imagine how much trouble a kid with his genetics will get into?” I couldn’t help but grin.

“We may never sleep again—at least not with both eyes closed.”

“You ready?”

“I love you.”

“I love you too, beautiful girl.”

The camera flipped back to the test. She pinched the edge of the paper towel. “I’m not looking.”

She pulled the paper towel away.

I squinted. Her hand was shaking.

“Hold your phone still.”

She let out a puff of air and laughed. “Never mind, I’ll look.”

The camera turned back around, and she was grimacing at me. She brandished the test at me and turned it toward her. Blinking, she cocked her head.

“Okay, wait a minute.”

“What?”

“I forgot to read the instructions. I don’t know what this means.”

“We got ahead of ourselves.”

“I feel like I just failed a chemistry test.”

“In your defense, it’s been a few years since you took one of these.”

“And I always bought the ones that said pregnant or not pregnant. I forgot to check for that before choosing one. At least I grabbed one with English instructions.”
