The door opened, and the assistant who’d shown me to the room in the first place poked her head in. “Sorry to bother you, but your husband is here to see you.”

She opened the door wider, and Valor strolled in, grinning.

What was he doing here?

I was so excited to see him that I squealed and launched myself into his arms. The assistant laughed and closed the door behind her as she left.

“You didn’t tell me you were coming!”

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you ahead of time.”

“I thought you had meetings all this week.”

“Kim moved them for me. How could I pass up the chance to see you while you’re in New York? I know you probably don’t want me underfoot, but I wanted—needed—to be with you. Is that weird?” He gave me a wry smile.

“Not at all. I love how much you’ve been checking on me since we found out, but seeing you in person is even better.”

He squeezed me tighter and kissed me. He was probably ruining my lipstick, but the makeup department would have to deal with it.

“How are you feeling?” His eyes were so filled with affection and concern that my eyes burned with unshed tears. Everything was making me so emotional.

I was all warm, and felt goofy and in love, almost like when we were kids. He’d come all this way to see me, and I was only here for a short while. It was so sweet.

“How have you been feeling since I messaged you?”

“Do I look green? Because I feel green.”

“I hope you’ve been eating. Loïc is going to have my head if he finds out you’re pregnant and I haven’t been making a point of observing every meal and calculating its nutritional value.”

I laughed, feeling even more ill as my queasy stomach added extra butterflies. I was excited to tell Loïc, but also worried. As unhinged as the man could be, this might put him over the edge.

“Have you heard from him?”

“No. I would have told you.”

I nodded and stopped myself from biting my lip. We’d probably already done enough damage to my makeup.

“When do you go on?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Have you eaten?” he asked more directly, since I hadn’t answered his roundabout question.

I gave a small shrug. “I ate a bit of a granola bar, but it doesn’t feel like it wants to stay down.”

“Is there anything you can think of that sounds appealing to you, or might help settle your stomach?”

“To be honest, I would love some lemonade.”

“Did you tell them that?”

I shook my head. “The assistant is so busy. Apparently, a few of her underlings are gone to source things for other guests, so I didn’t want to be a bother. The room was stocked with snacks and bottled water, but the idea of water is disgusting today.”

He gave me a sympathetic wince. “How can the idea of water be turning your stomach?”

“Even you saying it out loud is turning my stomach.” I shook my head dismissively. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll be fine.” I smiled at him andgrabbed his hands. “Come sit on the couch with me. I’m happy you’re here.” He sat next to me and draped an arm around my shoulders. I leaned into him, feeling safe.

“I was going to go get you some lemonade.”
