Just as I drifted off to sleep, I let my fingers brush over my lips.

Hells. I was in trouble.

Chapter

Twenty-Eight

Wolf’s hands on my body taunted my mind. And that damn kiss.

It came out of nowhere. Wolf had been so hot and cold ever since I met him. He was either saving my life or ridiculing me, either pissing me off or healing me with blood magic.

But he was nothing like Lanson, that was for damn sure.

I didn’t see Wolf again after that. I tried to control my thoughts, tried to rid them of his icy eyes and muscular hands, but it was near impossible.

I couldn’t have been asleep for more than a few hours before a scream filled the hallway, echoing off the stone walls and closed doorways. My eyes shot open immediately as I reached for Venom, who was slipped perfectly beneath my pillow.

Another scream rang out, somewhere further into the castle.

I jumped out of bed and slid my boots on. Every beat of my heart pumped my body with fuel, with energy for a fight.

I crept toward the door and waited for a sound in the hallway, hearing nothing.

Only silence filled the air, along with the muffling of a few other students who were also awoken by the screams.

Where the fuck was Wolf?

A strange sense of worry filled my senses, mixing with the adrenaline and all but forcing me out of my room.

After a few silent steps forward, other students followed behind me as we all made our way down the corridors, trailing after the sound of the screams.

Just when I thought perhaps nothing was wrong, that maybe whatever happened had ended, I heard another scream.

I burst into an all-out run, Venom tight in my grip.

Suddenly, I was back in Midgrave, running through the streets and following any shout of terror I could hear.

Suddenly, I was back with Lord, with him yelling at me to move faster, quicker, stronger.

And it was damn good, because I turned one more corridor in that castle, and a vampyre jumped from the shadows.

“No,” I hissed under my breath. “What in all hells?”

Someone behind me shrieked. I didn’t.

I leapt forward, meeting the beast in the center of the hallway with Venom ready. This one was strong, still with most of its flesh intact. It must have turned rabid very recently.

I sliced it down, Venom finding its heart in one swift motion.

“Was that a vampyre?” Ashlani asked in the crowd behind me.

“Yes,” I replied. “And there will be more. Get ready.”

She whimpered in panic, but I didn’t blame her. Those who hadn’t fought these monsters up close wouldn’t be prepared for the half-rotting flesh, for the rabid attacks and the smell of death.

Hells, thatsmell.

A grunt around the corner tipped me off to another creature lurking in the shadows. I ran, ready to fight, and found him sinking his teeth into someone’s flesh.
