Within two seconds, Wolf had found me. He ripped the creature’s head from its body, throwing both to the floor beside me.

And then he was there, kneeling next to me, wiping the blood from my face, my shoulders.

“There were too many,” I gasped.

“I know,” Wolf said as he tore off a piece of his shirt, tying it around my thigh.

“I killed so many, but they kept coming.”

“I know, Huntress.” His eyes were dark, his brows drawn together in concern. “Stay awake for me. Don’t close your eyes.”

“I don’t want to fight,” I slurred. I couldn’t tell if I had said the words out loud or in my delusional mind, but Wolf’s eyes found mine, needy and desperate.

“Fuck,” he cursed. “You’re coming with me. We have to get out of this hallway.”

I barely registered him lifting me, carrying me over the scattered bodies.

Wolf’s heart beating against my ear became the one thing I held onto, the one thing that stopped me from slipping away into oblivion.

I fought. For him, I fought to stay awake. But somewhere in the castle, somewhere amidst shadows and death and fighting, my eyes fell closed.

And I was too far gone to open them again.

Chapter

Thirty

Wolf whispered in the distance, and I thought it might still be my dream, somewhere that wasn’t reality.

Wasn’t the castle.

Wasn’t this horrid, vampyre-dwelling place.

I tried to blink my eyes open, but the light was far too bright. I shut them again and listened for Wolf’s voice, focusing on him, on the one thing I knew was real.

“She wasn’t supposed to get hurt,” Wolf said.

“And it was your job to ensure she was out of the way, Wolf. You could have mentioned the fact that she would slaughter every fucking vampyre we sent in there.”

“That wasn’t the plan, and you know it.” He sounded angry, confused.

What were they talking about?

“It all turned out as it should have. The girl is fine, and the job was complete. He only wanted to send a message.”

Wolf growled. “She was seconds away from being devoured by one of your monsters!”

Whoever Wolf was talking to huffed. “Monsters? Really, Wolf? It had to be done.”

“It didn’t, and it won’t happen again. You can get the fuck out of here and tell him that it’s over. I’m doing everything I was told.”

A pause filled the air.

“Fine,” the male replied. “For what it’s worth, I never intended for him to send that many vampyres. It was only supposed to be a couple.”

“Just get out,” Wolf sighed. “Before anyone finds you here.”

What. The. Fuck.
