“And the rest?”

As if on cue, a wave of despair hit my gut, forcing me to grunt in pain. If he held that emotion inside without letting me feel it, he did an excellent job.

“You’ve been holding back,” I breathed.

“Only a little,” Wolf responded. His eyes had glossed over. “I can feel what you feel too, in case you forgot.”

I stifled a laugh. “Really? And what is it I feel?”

A crack of thunder littered the sky.

“At first, I felt nothing. A numbness of sorts, I don’t know. But under that, something lingered. Something… wicked.”

I swallowed.

“I realized you’re in just as much pain as I am, Huntress.” He flashed his perfect teeth. “That’s what makes us so similar.”

I opened my mouth to object, to respond, to tell him he had lost his mind entirely. But when I tried to speak, nothing came out. I couldn’t find the words.

A tickle of satisfaction lit up on my stomach—his emotions, not mine.

Rain fell.

Slowly at first, then more.

The raindrops hit the thick leaves above us before trickling down, scattering across the dirt around us and splattering on the shoulders of my jacket.

Wolf pushed himself up and crawled over to me, moving to rest against the tree right beside me. He put his arm around myshoulders and pulled me to him, spanning his wings around us to keep us dry.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

He stilled, as if he had been doing all of this without thought and just realized his own actions. “I’m keeping you dry. Now that we’re bonded, I’m not risking you freezing your ass off. I’d like to be as comfortable as I can while we’re stranded out here.”

Hells. When he closed the remaining two inches between us, I didn’t fight it.

Wolf rested against the base of the tree while I pressed up against his chest, my thigh flush against his as his hand tightened around my shoulder.

The comfort of his wings was warm and safe, I had to admit.

And the way his thigh radiated heat through my own training leathers…

“Stop that,” Wolf growled.

“Stop what?”

“Thinking those things.”

“You don’t know what I’m thinking.”

His fingertips lazily moved against my shoulder. I couldn’t even begin to fight the chills that erupted down my spine; it was a physical reflex.

“Careful, Huntress.”

My face heated.Fuck that.Wolf was toying with me now, testing how he could make me feel.

Two could play that fucking game.

I placed my hand on the top of his thigh and nuzzled closer against his chest. His thigh tightened immediately, but after a few seconds, he relaxed under my touch.
