And I fought like all hells.

Chapter

Forty

With Wolf at my back, I slaughtered every vampyre who ran at me. Blood dripped from my face, running into my mouth, but I didn’t care. A vampyre bit my arm, but it didn’t slow me down.

I stabbed and pulled Venom from corpse after corpse after corpse.

And we weren’t making it any closer to the damn wall.

“We need a new plan!” I yelled. “They’re coming out of nowhere!”

Wolf grunted in pain. “I’m open to ideas!”

“Stay behind me.” I stabbed another vampyre. Then another. “I think I can use my blood magic one more time.”

“No!” Wolf argued. “You’ll be drained. It’s too risky!”

“I don’t have much of a choice, Wolf!”

For the first time during the Transcendent, terror shook my voice.

We were running out of options, and we both knew it.

The sound of Wolf’s sword slicing through flesh rang true behind me. It was the constant sound of victory, and as long as I heard that damn sword killing the beasts, I would keep fighting.

As long as he was here, I would fight.

“I have to try it, Wolf!”

“Fine, then I’m trying with you.”

His burnt, feathered wings brushed my back as he moved closer to me.

“On three!”

Wolf’s sword rang again, buzzing in the air, mixing with my dwindling adrenaline.

“One!” Teeth grazed my shoulder, too close to my throat.

“Two!” Wolf’s back now fully pressed against mine, his remaining wings being ripped by the claws that closed in around us.

“My heart bows to you and you only, Huntress.”

A tear fell down my face. “Three!”

Everything I knew went black.

Chapter

Forty-One

Iknew something was wrong the second I opened my eyes. I could feel the emptiness in my soul.

For one, it was too quiet. Not a single leaf rustled in the wind.

I pushed myself up from the ground and immediately found Wolf lying a few feet away on his back. His wings were completely shredded and burnt. His eyes were closed.
