Until now, anyway. How many times had Wolf saved my life? He had literally died for me, though neither of us knew then that dying was the ticket into The Golden City.

“I don’t remember my parents,” I started, “but Lord tells me the story often. He found me in the forest. Our camp had been ravaged by them. Vampyres. I was the only one alive. For whatever reason, they left me. I was only a baby.”

Wolf didn’t blink. Didn’t move.

“Lord took me in. He trained me as his own. He already had a small group of assassins that worked beneath him, and together they would take out pretty much anyone for the right price. But soon after he found me, he started Phantom. He recruited the deadliest fae and taught them to be weapons.”

“He raised you in Phantom?”

“He raised me to survive.” There I was again, defending him.

“He forced you to kill, Huntress, and don’t try to tell me they were just vampyres. We both know that is not the truth.”

I gave Wolf a soft smile. “I did this all for him,” I said, though the words were quiet and weak. Maybe it was because I realized how pathetic it sounded now. “If I turn my back on him, Wolf, I have nothing. Nothing.”

“That’s not true,” he argued. “You have everything without him. He hurts you, Huntress. This?” He reached around my shoulder and let his fingers trace one of the many, many scars. “This is not love.”

My throat burned. I fought tears. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Wolf leaned forward and kissed my bare shoulder. “I know you, Huntress. He raised you to be a killer, and you’ve succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. I mean, hells. Look at what you’ve accomplished these last few weeks. It’s no wonder why he chose you to get into The Golden City.” He kissed me again, higher. “But you deserve to be around people who really love you. Who will protect you against anything, against anyone.”

“Like you?” I asked, half-joking.

He met my stare. “Yes.” His voice did not quiver. “Like me.”

He kissed me deeply, intertwining his fingers in my hair, before pulling away. “We should get dressed. As much as I’d love to stay hidden away in this room with you, we need to find out what’s happened to The Golden City.”

I groaned, knowing he was right. The night had been a nice break from reality, but that’s all it was. A break. We were supposed to be living in luxury with the elite fae and angels. This? This was the furthest thing from luxury.

My clothes were still on the washroom floor, dirty and covered in filth. So when Wolf tossed me a pair of clean trousers and a tunic from the dresser, I squealed in relief.

I had just finished putting them on when voices rang out from the hallway.

I froze, glancing at Wolf. He stared directly at the door, unmoving.

We were not the only ones here.

“Wolf?” I whispered.

He looked at me then, reluctantly. Heart-breakingly.

“Wolf,” I said again.

He didn’t answer. Didn’t move. Didn’t seem the least bit concerned as the voices grew closer and closer to our room.

“I’m so sorry, Huntress,” he said.

“Wha—”

The door burst open, flying with so much force itshatteredagainst the wall behind it.

Three men walked in.

Men.

No, they were not creatures of this realm. They were creatures of light, omitting energy as if they were the sun and the moon all in one. The male in the front of the group had long, white hair that fell to his waist.

White angel wings blended with the light, creating an iridescent rainbow of pure magic.
