Chapter

Thirteen

Natural magic was supposed to be simple and easy.

Easy my ass.

It took a couple of hours for the rest of the students to learn the basics. Everyone started with the power of the earth, learning to pull the grass from the ground as if it were nothing at all.

I tried, palms hovering above the ground like a damned idiot, but I never made the grass grow.

It’s all part of who you are, Headmistress Katherine said.Open yourself to the magic of the lands.

Bullshit. It was all bullshit.

The sun set in the distance. I missed dinner because I had been in the courtyard hours after everyone else left.

I didn’t care. If I couldn’t summon even the easiest natural magic, I was utterly screwed.

“Try again.” The female voice from behind made me jump. “This time, close your eyes.”

I spun to find Voiler walking toward me.

“I thought I was alone out here,” I replied stiffly.

“You were.” She stuffed her hands in her pockets. “Until five minutes ago, anyway.”

I rolled my eyes and refocused on the grass. “It’s no use.”

She kept approaching. “Funny. You didn’t strike me as the type to give up so easily.”

Her black boots—similar to mine—crunched the ground until she stood directly in front of me. I looked up at her from my seated position on the grass.

And then she surprised me by dropping to her knees in front of me.

This close, I could see the freckles that littered her white skin.

“Here,” she said, gripping my palms and turning them down again toward the soil. “Close your eyes.”

With a long exhale, I did as she suggested. Normally, I would have my guard up in a situation like this. But something about Voiler made me feel at ease.

She would not hurt me. She’d wanted to help Maekus earlier, too. I felt it.

“Now picture the magic stemming from your body. You are one with the grass, with the dirt. You come from the same goddess, and you belong together. Allow the grass to become one with you.”

I tried to focus on her words, but I couldn’t stop the doubt from creeping into my skull, yelling at me for being such an utter failure.

My shoulders slumped. Voiler released my hands.

“You have to try harder, Huntyr.” Her voice was calming, not what I expected from her small fighter body.

“I’m trying.”

“You’re not, and it’s because you’re afraid.”

I snapped my eyes to hers. “I am notafraidof magic.”

She shrugged. “Then why are you closing yourself off? It is notyouwho holds the key to natural magic, Huntyr. It is the archangels who blessed this land.”
