Page 73 of Wings So Wicked

“It’s unfortunate that you’ll benothingafter you bond with him.” Wolf pulled away, walking down the street the way we came.

I stood there, panting, trying to piece together what the fuck just happened.

“Excuse me?” I called after him. “What did you just say to me?”

“Don’t make me repeat it,” he yelled over his shoulder. “It’s embarrassing enough as is.”

I pulled Venom from her sheath and lunged, a mess of anger and chaos and tragedy. The blade aimed directly at his back, and I wanted to dive it in—hells, I wanted to hurt him.

But he turned just in time, his wings blowing my hair across my face as he grabbed my wrist and twisted, pulling the blade from my hand.

“You’re a coward. You’re jealous that I may actually trust someone other than you.”

He clenched his teeth. “You haven’t seen me jealous yet, Huntress. If I were jealous, your little toy would be dead.”

“Then what?” I cried. “What could I possibly have done to make you this angry?”

Darkness swarmed his eyes. “You feel loneliness and you lean on the first piece of shit who shows you any signs of affection.”

I ripped my hand away and shoved his chest. “You don’t get to say that to me. You don’t get to have any opinion about who I do and do not lean on.”

“He doesn’t know you.” Wolf’s chest rose and fell with every breath. “He does not know how strong you are. Hells, he thinks you’re a fragile doe, Huntress. What would he think if he saw you like this?” His eyes grazed my body. “Dripping in blood and fuming with hatred?”

He might as well have punched me in the gut. My mind spun for something to say, for an argument, for a truth. But I had nothing.

Wolf’s words, as painful and horrid as they were, were true. And he knew I feared them, knew I hid that truth deep inside of me, buried underneath the façade of this weak, helpless female.

“Right,” Wolf said without softening his sharp eyes. “That’s what I thought.”

I watched him walk away, leaving me in the street with my heart in pieces.

Until he stopped walking and turned around.

And all hells, I hated the way my stomach twisted.

“Are you coming? Because you can’t fly back on your own.”

I wasn’t sure what changed. Wolf was sometimes flirty and arrogant and annoying, but he could also be cold and brutal and distant.

I walked toward him and let him pick me up, his warm skin electrifying my body as he held me. This beast, this wicked and forceful angel that had fallen from his place amongst the greats, had a dark side, too.

Only he was much, much better at hiding his.

Chapter

Nineteen

“It’s not working.” I let my hands fall onto the table of the study. Hells, I had been in the study with Ashlani all day attempting to scrounge up the tiniest ounce of magic. Hours had passed, the sun had set, yet still… nothing.

“You’re too hard on yourself.” Ashlani placed both elbows on the long wooden table and leaned forward, her straight blonde hair falling over her shoulder as she looked deep into my eyes. “Relax a little. You’ll get the hang of it soon.”

I leaned back in my wooden chair. The room was filled with rows and rows of books, none of which seemed to help me conjure natural magic.

At least it offered us some privacy against all the eyes during the day.

“I have no idea how you’re doing this so easily.” I crossed my arms over my chest in defeat.

Ashlani smiled, holding her hand out and sending a tiny gust of wind into my face.
