It was nice.

“I have something for you,” he said after a minute.

I opened my eyes and found him reaching for his bag.

“What?” I asked, my brows furrowing. “What are you talking about?”

But my mouth fell open as soon as I saw what he removed from that bag.

The familiar steel handle, the perfectly angled blade.

Venom.

“Hells,” I breathed, taking the perfectly intact weapon from his hands. “But this was broken. I saw Espek break it himself!”

Wolf shrugged. “I know a fae not too far from here who specializes in wielding weapons.”

I stared at him, my mouth hanging open. “Wolf… I don’t know what to say.” Tears threatened my eyes. I flipped Venom over, taking in the perfect emerald jewels and now-shining steel.

“It seemed important,” he added.

“It—she was. This was the only gift he ever gave me.”

“The male who raised you?”

My eyes hesitantly met his. “Yes.”

His face hardened, but I smiled. Wolf didn’t understand, but he didn’t have to. This dagger was the only thing that reminded me of him, of home. Venom reminded me of my purpose here, reminded me of who I really was.

I was lost without her.

Before I knew what I was doing, I threw my arms around Wolf’s shoulders and hugged him.

Wolf tensed at first but eventually wrapped his arms around my back.

We didn’t have to be enemies anymore.

In fact, we weren’t enemies at all.

Wolf and I ate our food in silence, with the entire dining hall to ourselves. All the other students were in bed by now, getting plenty of sleep before another grueling day at the academy tomorrow.

Everyone but us.

Wolf sat across from me at the end of the long wooden table, focusing on his meal and ripping a piece of meat apart with his white teeth.

I did the same, eating as much as my stomach could handle. With all the extra training from Wolf, I needed the fuel.

“Magic isn’t as easy for me,” I started in between bites. “It feels… it feels resistant.”

Wolf ate the rest of his meal in two bites before he leaned back, eyes glued on me and brows drawn together. “You’ll get there,” he said. “You just need to focus enough.”

Something glittered in his bright blue eyes.

“Your eyes,” I said before I could stop myself, “is that because you’re an angel? Do all angels have light in their eyes?”

He smiled, looking away and actually flushing for the first time since I’d known him. “No, not all angels. My eyes look this way because of the magic I possess.”

“Lightning magic?”
