The power flowing through my body was not my own. I was about to give up when I felt the jolt of power that surged me forward enough to pull the veil down to retrieve Serena. Usually, I had to call for her soul, but it felt like she had been lingering close or someone knew she should be close.

Now, I was a prisoner to this power and there was nothing I could do except stand here like a sentry, protecting my mate and pack. It felt old but familiar, making me worry that I was going to pay for this power I was borrowing. There was only so much magic my body could take before it shut down. I just hoped it was enough time for Katarina to get her answers.

“Ok, I’m ready,” Katarina said, glancing at me with worry in her gaze.

“Ryder is MIA, I haven’t heard from him in weeks and I’m worried,” Serena blurted out. “I've sent him messages and I haven’t heard anything. No one has seen him and I fear he might be dead along with Soren and Gray.”

“Where the hell were they going?” Katarina looked worried.

“Ryder wouldn’t tell me, all he said was something about a tower that was heavily guarded which is why he wanted that necklace. I’m afraid he’s been captured.”

“Shit, dammit. I should never have asked for it,” Katarina said, chewing on her bottom lip. “I should have…”

“Don’t you know it was a back-up shot? But if he’s still alive… Can you tell Ryder…” Serena stopped speaking like what she had to say next was too hard. “Can you tell him that I wished it could have been us.”

“Of course,” Katarina looked sympathetic. “I wish you guys…”

“Our mother was like them,” Serena said, immediately changing the subject.

“Like who?” Katarina asked.

“Like your mates,” she replied. “Mom was a witch-shifter and their race was dying.”

“Wait, what? How the hell could you know that? She died when you were born.” Katarina's shock was evident, but I couldn’t help the excitement that our mate was like us. Would she be able to shift? How did we not sense it? How the hell did a Belladonna fall in love with one of our own?

“Dad told me, and we think you might be the only one who her wolf gene was passed along to. That is why you were sent here, instead of me.” Serena looked at all of us. “I think it's why you all had that pull to her, I don’t know if you can sense her wolf, but she is partially one of you.”

“You sent her because she is one of us?” Zev questioned.

“Yes, my aunt was like Aeon. She was a seer, and one of her visions was that a daughter of the moon, and a daughter of magic would break the spell. My grandmother didn’t know what that meant until my father fell in love with our mother and found out she was a shifter. Out of four girls, we strongly believed Katarina was moon-blessed, her violet eyes are exactly like our maternalgrandmother's eyes. She exhibited traits early on that led my grandmothers to believe she was moon-blessed like you guys.”

“Moon-blessed?” Lucien asked.

“The goddess of the moon shared a bit of her magic thus creating shifters, but with witch-shifters you’ve been blessed by the moon and a piece of moon magic is with you,” Serena explained. “Which is why you have witches and half shifters in a harmonious balance.”

“Why didn’t I shift during puberty, this makes no sense, Serena.” Katarina looked distressed.

Serena didn’t immediately say anything, and I knew whatever she was going to say next was going to be big. It seemed Katarina had lived her life full of lies and now she was paying the price for it.

“They didn’t want anyone to know what you were, so father and grandmother sealed your magic to prevent it from happening.”

There was nothing but silence. I looked at Zev and Lucien to gauge their reactions, but I couldn’t decipher anything.

She needs to hurry.

An alien voice said in my head, giving me goosebumps.

“Hurry,” I growled. My own voice was different, almost like when my wolf spoke for me.

Serena looked back at me nodding her head.

“They fucking bound my magic!” Katarina screamed. “I’ve been helpless and struggling throughout my life because they thought it was a good idea to bind my fucking magic so no one would know I was a shifter? Couldn’t they have just sealed that part of me away?”

“It was magic they weren’t familiar with, but like I said, both sides of you live harmoniously together so there was no way to seal one without the other.”

“What else?!” Katarina looked like she was losing it.

Serena’s ghost flinched.
